and here we are, with yet another 3.0 review

so i finally decided to have a go at 3.0

first things first, i had to manually plug in my hotas. and my cat is not happy, frontier, since i was forced to remove a think blanket form beneath it to put it beneath my king size gaming chair with super smooth bearings so it doesn't slip away when i push my new pedals. speaking of which, i noticed the stopper rails separating them from the wall had loosened. how?? i haven't even been using them for weeks, why do we have to still suffer these sort of silly bugs after 3 years?

well, i'm a reasonable guy so i went into the trouble to fix it myself, or find a workaround. of course none of the several allen keys i am sure to own were to be found in the 'random stuff' area of the closet. how typical! what about a proper search function, frontier? after minutes of pointless rummaging around and having all sorts of junk falling down on me i finally gained access to the tool bag. well, it's technically a bag, and there are tools in it. amongst other stuff which is none of your concern!

know what? none of the dozen keys i came up with fit the pedals. oh, come on, frontier! have you even heard about industry standards? fed up, i considered if i should temporarily disable the wall for investigation, but finally decided to go on anyway and if the pedals hit the wall then so be it, when i suddenly glimpsed the oversized allen key that came with the pedals (thanks, guys!) hiding below some stuff lying on my desk. well that's luck and a good omen! i had the stoppers fixed in no time. that's efficency, frontier.

after a few ergonomics checks i fired up the game. of course, an update pending. how appropriate! i'm being sarcastic in case you missed it. well, i was absolutely commited to this experience, and i'm not easily put down, so there went yet another full minute of my life down the drain, wasted for ever, staring at a blue inane progress bar. finally launching and time to put my rift on. i'm so excited! oh, you think that was it? yeah, you wish. now the stupid game had to test my patience computing shaders again. and then some. curse you, frontier.

and, finally!

here i am in a viper docked at iqbal hub. i spend a few seconds contemplating the steam coming out from the depths of the hangar. can't remember why i am here, but i know for sure i want to look at some of the new planets. there must be planets somewhere in here, right? don't fail me this time, frontier, i've come a long way for you! fire up system map and ohhh shiny! hr-4979-a-2 is right around the corner. well, actually more than 2700 user friendly ls away, but it is metallic and it even has nice rings, with asteroids and stuff! there i go. launch!

hey, wait a sec. my pedals aren't even bound! holy crap, frontier didn't think of that either, and here i am, floating inside a station without yaw control. with nerves of steel i fire up the options panel, and instantly find the right category and option, smirking: you really thought you would fool me with that mishmash? bind pedals, done, ha-ha! ups ... of course. they are inverted! because everyone knows the default option for anything is anything inverted, right frontier? in case you didn't know, i queried the internet and learned from some very knowledgeable reddit users that push right pedal is nose right, push left pedal is nose left, and that's it. none of your inversion nonsense makes sense, you hear me frontier? do you want me to play your game at all?

i finally get to hr-4979-a-2 and, indeed, it's colorful. veeeery nice. i have no srv but i do have performance enhanced yoohoo thrusters with some ungodly wizardry on them to blast above the surface, nearly crashing several times because i still have no idea how to use these pedals. not many features on this planet but still some nice craters and hills. i hunt some poi and find a lonely wanted viper just there, parked in the middle of nowhere. i fire a shot but it doesn't respond. maybe the pilot is dead? if he was sleeping that must have surely woken him up! another shot, same thing. so, i've nothing against him but you don't leave your ship laying around carelessly, specially not on a red planet, and i need some target practice for my pedals and you are a nice stationary target so there you go: i detarget and start circling it while shooting my multicannons until it eventually blows up. i feel a bit sorry about the guy when he finally comes back from his space mushrooms trip to find his boat in shambles, but life's hard, and i guess he can go find some more mushrooms anyway. i love making people happy.

it's about time to go into orbit and race between the asteroids. there is even a resource extraction site for some action. it's gorgeous and i'm actually very lucky not to smash into one of those rocks, not even once. and with gimballed weapons i actually manage to hit stuff and reap up about a million credits in bounty claims in what appears to be no time. oh, crap, wooot? it's actually been almost two hours since i started, i had no idea, and it's about time to leave and show up late at the dojo and prepare some silly excuse for my rift face. well played, frontier, well played!

so, uhm, yeah, sorry for the digression, this was a 3.0 review but i thought some proper context was in order. yes the game is still riddled with bugs as you have seen, it has no point nor purpose whatsoever, but still manages to engulf you without mercy no matter what. the learning curve with the pedals is still too steep, frontier, you need to work on that.

yeah the planets are indeed nice, i don't give a damn about the other stuff, and the game is astonishingly cool as always! so i guess ... thanks after all, frontier!
