Angels Fall First

Catched my eye on Steam. It was the art cover and name.

Dubs itself FPS combined arms space combat game. The kind of like Battlefield wotsitnumber, the futuristic one - just in space. Apparently it has bots, so if it doesn't fly with playerbase it might still be playable. It's EA (not the corp), indie, developed on Unreal.

Any thoughts to share?

This looks really good, and has properly piqued my interest.

However, the Steamspy stats aren't promising - only 320 players online when I checked today. I'd ideally prefer to play this as a full multiplayer title.

If only I'd known about this game three years ago, I'd have been all over it like a rash.

And it's BF2142. I'm hoping against hope that the next BF title is BF2140 One, or whatever daft name EA/DICE choose.

12€ now in Steam, it has indeed combined arms space and land scenarios, including boarding actions. 400-500 players concurrent as I type.

Hey OP; I've had a good look and i see no connection to EA,could you link please? All i've come across is that MicroSoft are the publishers. And yes it's important me,as it should be for anyone who wants great games and not just a exercise in gamer manipulation or a slot machine. I will not buy anything from EA or Activision anymore and have not for a few years now!
As for AFF it looks very interesting. o7

Fps controls are a bit clunky in this game, and the fighter combat is not particularly satisfying. Still an intriguing game and they improved the UI a lot.

EA = Early Access in this context. Hence the "(not the corp)" part of the OP

I have been following that project for many, many years now, since its early conception. It was not on Steam back then and it was not commercial either.
I have collected tonnes of concept art and ship designs.

Some of their capital ship designs are truly awesome and inspiring. They belong to the best I have seen, including ED.
I wish we could have some of those in Elite.

I do consider buying the game just to have a 3 dimensional look at the ships and level design, but I will wait until it is out of early access.
I do not like how the capital ships are moved in space though (2nd video) and I do not care much about the gameplay.

Re capital ships movement, the second video is from 2015 though, not sure if things have evolved since then tbh.

I gave this a try in 2016 when it was free to test. The atmosphere was immense especially in the space combat maps where you could pilot one of the capital ships, small nimble fighters or act in a crew capacity either manning turrets, trying to board enemy vessels or repel boarders. Its playerbase was tiny back then and I was mostly going against bots which killed off all fun quickly. Bot AI was stupid as bricks, coming for you in straight lines and had perfect aim so even tho you could herd and kill em easily it was downright frustrating when you peeked out of cover only to be shot by multiple bots from miles away. Sounds also were very bad and especially the big ships had "placeholder" sounds which made em known as "submarines in space" due to their noises. It made me realize how important proper sound is for games.

I marked it down as a game with "great potential" tho. I see they are still in early access but seem to have made progress since my last check.

I m with Iskariot on the EA issue. I ll wait until they have a finished product to test but seeing how far they ve come especially with such a small team and miniscule funding I ve gotta say it makes other similar projects look pretty bad in comparison (*cough* Star Citizen*cough*)

@Garix; LoL thanks Commander,i just saw EA and thought what do they mean by not the corp, then just went on a rage-research and then a rant.
Thanks for the laugh, even if it was at myself LoL o7

For 10 bucks I gave it a shot. I, too find it a bit clunky. Not a fan of the FPS shooting, yet it is playable. Even reminds me of old Battlefield 2142.

I played around with bots and stepped into MP to get wrecked. I guess shotte gunning simply works better when defending. Players have relatively high movement speed, medium to long range you have to deal with bullet travel time so the first thing you`'ll notice is that you should sidestep. TTK seems pretty high. Headshotting obviously helps, but I only do it vs bots or when using a trusty shotte.

Space combat is kinda best imo, especially with the boarding and combined arms approach, but I'm not sure it's properly balanced.
