Animal is preventing other animals from breeding

I don't understand this message, and can't seem to find anything in game to explain it to me.

It isn't in my alerts anymore but there wasn't really anything to show. It just came up in the alerts list something like "SoandSo (African Buffalo) Is preventing other animals from breeding"

I'm sure it has something to do with the whole alpha system/alpha male is the only one who can mate system..

Oh yeah have you done the genetics, compare mates thing and see what it says?

Seen it too, even when there's only 1 male and 1 female in the exhibit..

Really weird and haven't seen any offspring in that enclosure anymore...

But there is only one male. At least of its species. It is an African Plains habitat so there are mixed species. But for the buffalo there is 1 male and 2 females at the moment.

The zoopedia says african buffalo become sterile at the age of 15 , maybe that is the cause?

I had this message and it was because my Alpha had become sterile. I imagine it is something to do with that.

Well clearly if the only male in a habitat is sterile then no breeding will occur but I have never seen that message come up in any other habitat and strangely in this case it had come up when the buffalo was like 12 or 13 and then went away never to be seen again even after the buffalo passed 15 (nd recently died).

Just a very confusing message.

I just had a quick test in sandbox with African buffalo, got the message to pop up twice with alpha males turning 15; and thus becoming sterile.
(Females also become sterile at that age, but it does not give a notification for this, it is only visible in the compare mates screen.)
