Animal Size Comparison

I thought I’d post a few size comparison photos for the heck of it. I always find these interesting. It’s very easy to underestimate the size of some animals and to overestimate some also.

One animal underestimated by many are moose.

For a lot of these photo's distance to the object and the distance to the objects surrounding it is what's making the photo.
Perspective can be quite off as well, because of the use of different lenses.

The elk isn't as close to the car as the photo suggests, which makes the elk look a lot bigger.
As well for the moose, they are big indeed, but these trees might be small(ish) as well.

I think we should all take a minute to be thankful that the largest (living) insect is a cricket/grasshopper relative and not a cockroach. In a weird way, that weta pic looks kind of cute.

@AlexVonHumbug no not really lol. I posted this mainly because of a thread I recently read about the snow leopard being undersized in game which frontier got right because they aren’t really that big. But the bison and camel being undersized as well which at least for the camel people might be right. And true also to the poster above who mentioned the angle of the pic makes the animals look more massive which is true but every animal shown is actually a very large animal for sure tho. I actually love looking at these types of things and find them interesting. Like last night I read a white rhinos head alone can weigh up to 2,000 lbs. These charts can tell you a lot about how animals and subspecies are doing also. Now they classify Bengal and Siberian as the same for tigers. I personally don’t buy this honestly you can tell clearly by looking at them they are very different from one another. And have had hundreds of years to evolve in different ways. As a matter of fact I read today that a lot of people believe by doing this and now classifying them as two subspecies total for tigers this loosens the protection on these animals for certain countries. Anyway one of the points I was going to make was when you look at wild Bengal and Siberian the Bengal is now arguably the biggest tiger especially in the Nepal region where males are getting 550 lbs on the light side. Meanwhile due to human encroachment the Siberian size has shrunk over the years as much of their time consist of patrolling huge territories for food. In captivity however the Siberian is capable of 650 plus pounds as to where Bengal size in captivity is actually smaller then the wild population. The region of lions also shows some of the same. Of course being social animals there’s a little more involved. Polar bears as well have somewhat shrunk due to climate change.

You are right though, that people often don't have a very good idea of the actual size of animals.
Which is exactly why actual data should be used instead of subjective comparisons, because the human mind doesn't work like a computer. Importing proper data into the engine and then using consistent measurement methods yields the best results for accurate sized animals. If it still feels too big or small, then it's probably just perceptual error on the viewer's part.

Nice images, especially the ones that show the size difference between different lion and tiger species. I thought you would be interested to know about this animal size comparison tool. Below is an example chart that shows the size difference between human and several animals. Hope that's helpful.

Not a bad site, their T. rex is over-sized a bit thoughView attachment 411267

Thank you for your feedback. The T-Rex might have been oversized by maybe around 30cm (0.3m) in height, which is negligible considering how big it is compared to other animals. But it was fixed nevertheless. If you still believe the size is inaccurate, please let me know including your source.
