Animals in PZ vs. animals in your local/city zoo(s) - Comparison

I got inspired to make this thread because of the discussion about the European pack and about building realistic zoos.

The question is, how many (and which) species of animals are in PZ that are also in your local zoo? How realistically would you be able to build your zoo in the game, animal wise?

For the record, I live in Europe. I live in the capital of my country and our city zoo is the only zoo we have. This list will also include the upcoming animals from the aquatic pack. For the purpose of expanding the selection as far as it can go, I will also include animals that are the same species, but not necessarily the same sub-species (animals that could act as a substitute).

My city zoo holds a selection of parrots in smaller aviaries and a few species of owls, and I think one big species of predatory birds (for the life of me can't remember which one). We also have a terrarium house, but for the purpose of this thread, I'll exclude exhibit animals. We also have a few farm animals which you can pet such as cows, goats, ducks, sheep, and pigs.

Let's have a look at how closely I can build my city zoo in Planet Zoo:

Animals in my city zoo that are also in PZ:

  1. Siberian Tiger
  2. Brown Bear (Grizzly Bear in-game)
  3. Common Ostrich
  4. Cheetah
  5. Indian Elephant
  6. Red Panda
  7. Western Chimpanzee
  8. Giraffe
  9. Bactrian Camel
  10. Chapman's Zebra (Plains Zebra in-game)
  11. California Sea Lion (Grey Seal in-game)
  12. Grey Wolf (Timber Wolf in-game)
  13. Red-necked Wallaby (Red Kangaroo in-game)
  14. Black and white Ruffed Lemur (Ring-Tailed Lemur and Red Ruffed Lemur in-game)
  15. Guanaco (Llama in-game)
  16. Reindeer
  17. Asiatic Lion (West African Lion in-game)
  18. Kafue lechwe (various Antelopes in-game)
  19. Wild Boar (Common Warthog in-game)

Animals that aren't in PZ, but are in my city zoo:

  1. Yellow-cheeked Gibbon
  2. Greater Rhea
  3. Patagonian Mara
  4. North American Beaver
  5. Black-tufted Marmoset
  6. Persian Leopard
  7. Meerkat

  12. Emu
  13. White Stork
  14. Fallow Deer
  15. Red Deer
  16. Elk

According to this list which includes only habitat animals, it's about 50/50.

I'm curious to see everyone else's lists. You can be as specific as you want. :)

I live in relatively small city in Europe that does not have a zoo, so I will take the closest big zoo and the one that I visited the most as my local then - Zoo Zlín in Czech republic.

So far I am kind of lucky, many species added in PZ are also in my local zoo and we have alot of niché or rare in zoos animals. :)

Yeah, I can see that. You are much closer with your list than I am! :D The zoo you posted really does have quite a few interesting and unique animals. Oh man, the anteater must be amazing to see.

Now that I think of it, they also have tamandua, so that is double the luck on the anteaters. It was also only thanks to this zoo I have ever seen the Kiwi - my all the time favourite bird, they have these awesome night tours from time to time where they basically let the guests come really early in the morning to see the kiwis active + you can get a breakfest after that in a zoo restaurant. Hopefully we can get restaurant in PZ in the future (and kiwis!), would be interesting to recreate that.

Oh, I love this thread. Good idea! My current local zoo is Helsinki Zoo and I live so close than I can walk there. I bought recently an annual pass.

Species that are both in my local zoo and PZ:
  1. Siberian tiger
  2. Snow leopard
  3. Red panda
  4. Reindeer
  5. Bactrian camel

Animals that are in my local zoo and are similar to the ones in PZ
  1. Asiatic lion
  2. Eurasian brown bear
  3. European wissent

Animals that aren't in PZ, but are in my city zoo:
  1. Amur leopard
  2. Leopard cat (they had three babies this year)
  3. Wild european cat
  4. Eurasian lynx
  5. Moose
  6. Wolwerine
  7. Pine marten
  8. Wild boar
  9. Alpine marmot
  10. Racoon
  11. Prairie dog
  12. Przewalski horse
  13. Barbary macaque
  14. Père David's deer
  15. Yak
  16. Musk ox
  17. Asiatic wild donkey
  18. Fennec fox (they had babies too, but I these animals are very difficult to see and I only saw them once)
  19. African pygmy goat
  20. African spurred tortoise
  21. Emu
  22. Red wallaby
  23. White lipped peccary
  24. Vicuna
  25. Mara
  26. Markhor
  27. Goitered gazelle
  28. Peacock (they wander all over the zoo)
I might have forgotten some animals and I'm not counting the exhibits or birds. They are preparing a new habitat for otters, I guess it will be either European or Asian ones, and a new habitat for a Saimaa ringed seal.

As you can see, it wouldn't be easy to recreate this zoo in the game 😅

I've essentially got two local zoos, a City Zoo and a more rural Safari park (Adelaide Zoo & Monarto Zoo in South Australia respectively), though technically there are a few others around I've never been to.

City Zoo list
Aldabra giant tortoise
Tiger (Sumatran rather than Bengal or Siberian)
Orangutan (Sumatran rather than Bornean)
Giant Panda
Flamingos (used to have a single Greater and Chilean, they both died a couple years back, getting to their 80s or so, Australia is banned from getting any more, due to failing to meet a deadline to have at least 20? together)
Hippopotamus (died last year I think)
Koala
Llama (in the petting zoo area)
Pygmy Hippo
Red Kangaroo
Red Panda
Ring-tailed Lemur
Cassowary (I think Northern rather than Southern)
Otter (Oriental small-clawed rather than Giant)
Tapir (Brazilian & Malaysian rather than Baird's)

Safari park list
African Wild dog
American Bison
Bongo (not readily visible most of the time)
Cheetah
Ostrich
Rhinoceros (no Indian ones, but both White and Black Rhinos)
Nyala
Plains Zebra
Giraffe (I suspect they are mostly Reticulated, but one of the breeding males is apparently a pure Rothschild's Giraffe)
Spotted Hyena
Chimpanzee
Lion

With the Safari park, most of the species there are represented, though the City Zoo does have a lot more Australian species (it is an Australian Zoo after all), but there's also a few things like Capybaras, Maras, American Alligators & Maned Wolves. In terms of exhibit animals, the City zoo does have something like 250 species overall, so I'm not really sure what is and isn't exactly, but a lot of them are aviaries.

My local zoo is a medium sized zoo, just right for a medium sized city in the United States. The big animals at our zoo that aren't in the game are meerkats, andean bear, siamang, african white rhino, red river hog, clouded leopard, hornbill, cougar, white cheeked gibbon and two toed sloth. Cape porcupine

Then again we also don't have many animals that are in the game - we recently exchanged our elephants for the rhinos, we don't have lions, chimpazees, gorillas, orangutans, koalas or giant pandas, so I guess it's a fair trade. Actually now that I think on it, I don't think we have a single canine species at all, either. Or any arctic animals. or any other bears besides the andean... or any marine animals.....I promise we do have animals though!

The bigger draw animals we have that are in PZ as well are the giraffes, red pandas, tigers and ostrich/zebra area, and the kangaroo walk through exhibit. I think the plan is to get an elephant area expanded so we can have them back, and the long range plan a few years ago did include lions, but I'm not sure how this year's affected that (it was a six year plan and this was the sixth year, and they were among the last animals to be added)

I am very fortunate to live very close to what I consider to be one of the best zoos in the United States, if not the world, that being the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. It's quite a large zoo, and as such there are a lot of animals that PZ has and doesn't that are at the zoo. It is one of the oldest zoos in the New World, and it has the oldest remaining building in a zoo, the current Reptile House, which was originally a Monkey House. Also, just to give some backstory behind my username, the University of Cincinnati, has the mascot Binturong as it's mascot (we call them Bearcats around here). Anyways, here's the list. I'm not gonna include all the smaller reptiles, insects or birds because obviously that list would be huge.

Shared Species:
  • Aardvark
  • Lion
  • Painted dogs
  • Asian elephant
  • Bonobo
  • Chimpanzee
  • Gorilla
  • Orangutan
  • Hippo
  • Zebra

  • Ostrich
  • Polar bear
  • Red panda
  • Ring-tailed lemur
  • Thomson's Gazelle
  • Wildebeest
Some of the species not in PZ
  • Binturong/Bearcat (Hopefully this changes!)
  • Aardwolf
  • African penguin
  • American alligator
  • American crocodile

  • Fairy penguin
  • Magellenic penguin
  • Kookaburra
  • Serval
  • West Indian manatee
  • Visayan warty pig
  • Mexican wolf
  • Meerkat

Again, that's not even close to how many species PZ is missing that the Cincy zoo has. And yes, I absolutely know that I am spoiled lol. That's part of the reason it's hard for me to not want a lot of these species in PZ, because I've grown up seeing them and would like to use them in game to.

Also, apparently I can't post pictures? Not sure why... here's a link that's got a good picture of Lucille.

This thread proves again that we definetely need a greater or more frequent influx of animals, unless they plan to support some kind of animal creator tool or animal mods at the end of PZ's official support lifespan.

  • They're in the process of adding a binturong
Despite having more differences than things in common, I've actually entertained the idea of attempting to recreate it in Planet Zoo. Most of the differences have a "kinda sorta similar enough" replacement, and while I'm not happy about the thought of subbing in a warthog over the babirusa or bonobos over the siamangs, I think it could mostly work. The aquatic pack helps a lot in that regard since there's really no other suitable replacement for penguins, seals, or otters. I'd just have to skip over a lot of the aviaries and aquarium, and make red pandas and pangolins carry a lot of the small mammal area's weight.
