Animals you've gained an interested in through Planet Zoo/Planet Zoo wishlists (both in game and not)

So just curious what are some animals that you've not given much of a thought about or know much about until Planet Zoo added them in, or that they started showing up on wishlists, or you found out about them while making your own wishlists? I've got few myself.

In looking up animals for South America, I found out about the Tayra. They are really interesting and would add to one of my favorite groups of animals, the mustelids. They immediately fast tracked into the top 25 of my want list. The chance of them making it in is extremely low, but I'm glad I found out about them nonetheless.

Another South American animal, the Brazilian Porcupine. Now, I knew they existed prior to the game but never gave them much though. They weren't even in my wishlists at first. But lately, the last year probably, my interest in them has grown a lot. It kind of started when we discussed Arboreal packs, and now they're my second most wanted Porcupine. They probably won't make it in the game but I think they could end up being an oddball pick, so it's not impossible.

The Sulawesi Bear Cuscus - this one is really recent for me and I found out about them while thinking outside the box for an island pack. They are marsupials as well. Like the Tayra, very low to no chance to make it in but I'm glad I've learned about them.

Animals added into the game I never gave much thought or discovered completely: I'm excited about the Fossa coming to the game even though I wasn't asking for them as much as most of the community. I knew about them before the game, but didn't know a lot about them and never gave them much of a thought. I'm interested in them now though and think they're a great addition to the game.
Babirusa - Another animal that I knew existed but gave very little thought to. So glad we've got them.
Nile Lechwe - to be honest, I'd never heard of this animal before. When it was announced for the pack I had to look it up to even see what type of animal it was. It's pretty neat looking for an antelope and I'm glad to have learned about them.

Quick answer: all of them

Shameful answer: I didn't know capibaras before joining the forum... I didn't know about monitors, bonobos, proboscis monkeys, pangolins, nyalas, pronghorns, gharials, cassowaries, wombats, dholes, Aldabra giant tortoises, maned wolves, and a lot of the exhibit animals. That's why I love this game, I have learnt so much and I've visited more real zoos since I play the game than in my whole life before.

What a lovely thread idea!!

Not PZ, but Zoo Tycoon: Okapis!
EDIT: also ring tailed lemurs! I looooved them as a kid playing ZT2

PZ: the binturong was the first that came to mind! I knew of it before and even got to pet one in a Zoo in SEA before (might have been Singapore?) but somehow forgot about it and now I find myself standing around their enclosure every time I’m at a zoo that has them!!

Also sea lions… I obviously knew of them before but they’ve never warmed my heart as much as when they whole community was out of its mind to get them, now I’m always looking forward to them!!

I don't think you need to worry about the aldabra Tortoise. If you knew about the Galapagos their practically the same. Also you didn't know monitors existed! Do you live in Greenland or something lol.

Oh my. I always loved animals but I was not that much of a zoo nerd, but thanks to PZ I got a habit of visiting zoos regularly and got into zoology as a whole a bit more. My poor boyfriend has to listen to my random animal facts that no-one cares about hahaha. (He is like a total animal anti-talent, I remember that one day when he said that Sea Lions lay eggs. (???).

There are some animals I had no idea existed prior PZ like Cassowaries or Babirusas.

And thanks to my now regular zoo visits I learned about Patagonian Maras and Reeves Muntjacs and I would love them both in PZ.

Ha ha, that's me with my bestie. I'm always talking about animals to her and she's all: "You're such a li'l nerd🤪"...

To further answer the OP question, I was always an animal nerd. I have so many encyclopedias of animals and go onto Wikipedia often and I watched Steve Irwin and also the Kratt bros.

But, animals that I had never heard of until PZ are the following:

  • Himalayan brown bear
  • Red ruffed lemur
  • Dall sheep
  • Cuvier's dwarf caiman
  • Giant otter
  • Black-and-white ruffed lemur
  • Fallow deer
  • Nile lechwe
  • Danube crested newt
  • Amur leopard
  • Egyptian fruit bat
  • Red deer
  • Red-necked wallaby
  • European peacock butterfly
  • Lar gibbon

Tough question becuase my interest for many animals come, go, and return like a phase. However I cannot help but think about echidnas whenever I try to speculate. I already liked many animals that I bring up in wishlists such as porcupines and brushtail possums.

do i really want to embrass myself and admit my apparant lack of animal knowledge before the game? yeah why not

Game animals i never heard of before:
  • arctic wolf
  • all lemur species that wasnt the ring tailed
  • bonobo
  • pangolin
  • wombat
  • dall sheep
  • dhole
  • dingo
  • fennec fox
  • quite a few of the african antelopes
  • gharial
  • giant otter
  • greater flamingo
  • himalayan brown bear
  • nile lechwe
  • all monitors
  • proboscis monkey
  • caimans
  • wild water buffalo
Animals that i have taken an interest in:
  • Brazillian procupine is now my most desired animal in the game, who couldnt love a cute little porcupine
prehensile-tail-porcupine-main-scaled-1024x768.jpg

  • White saki monkey among various other primates
  • Wolverine
  • African Pgymy Goat
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • African Crowned Crane
  • Scarlet Ibis
  • Pelicans

Like so many others, I always loved the idea of many species! I need to think if Planet Zoo inspired me to admire any animals more! Its hard... Maybe, the coyote, from today's discussion :) Although, he's a canid, so already one of my faves... Even if I wasn't thrilled about the idea of a coyote in game. One animal I really like from the game is African Wild Dogs. I start franchise zoos with them alot. But, I have always been interested in them so much so I have paw prints (a cast and original painting!) from them. Looking at the Zoopedia, the Nile Lechwe is actually an animal I love in-game that I knew next to nothing about. They're elegant and I like them for their (contrast with canines!) gentleness. Not that I'd not respect those horns!

Lovely thread ! It's amazing to see how PZ is making people learn about new animals !

I've been a big animal and zoo nerd for a very long time but somehow (and I know that's weird) I did not know the black wildebeest existed. I knew about the blue wildebeest very well but I had never realized another species existed. I also had never heard of the nile lechwe. As a big ungulate fan, I'm really glad PZ made me discover those species.

I knew all the other animals but I learned more about them because of the game, which is great !

Well some specific exhibit species aside I knew all the animals we got in game, me and my brother were insufferable animal nerds growing up. I blame it on my grandpa and his encyclopedias.

It also reaffirmed my love and interest in northern, cold weather animals. Maybe because of their partial absence in base game.

However it did rekindle some new interests. Some specific cases: Spider Monkeys, Echidnas, Australian Monitors, Sand Cats, Hyraxes...

None of these were on my original wishlists (pre-base game release days) but I learned to appreciate them more through other people wishes here and discussions.

Thanks so far everyone. I am glad that people are learning so much about animals that are new or very unfamiliar to them. I really have been an animal semi-nerd even in my younger days, and remember the amazing feeling I had when I discovered Zoo Tycoon. I learned about some new animals through that too, but what I'm learning about new or unfamiliar animals now goes deeper than that. Probably because there is more out there online information than there used to be. I think that this game is going right along with real life zoos in educating people, even if the primary goal with the game is to have fun.

True enough, there's more animals than what I first listed I've learned more about. Plenty of animals I knew existed and could even probably point them out in a picture, but didn't know a lot about them. For those that have a longer list of animals they've been unfamiliar with, my actual list when I think about it now is probably closer to a good 20 animals or so. Not many I've never heard of,at least in some form of the type of animal, but getting down to different species of monitors or that there's more than one Capuchian Monkey at all, sure, plenty like that I'm technically unfamiliar with.

I guess in reflecting I've been more of an animal nerd but have forgotten a lot of what I read as a kid, and as I grew only retained a lot of information about the more iconic and recognizable animals. More than the average person, I'd like to think, but certainly not as much as I know now. Despite some gripes I have about the roster and what's not getting in, I really think Frontier's done an amazing job on many levels with this game. They really deserve to be proud of what they've achieved with it.

Editing to add: the community should also be proud of itself. We're part of educating each other as well and increasing an interest in species. For example, the Tasmanian Devil. I knew about it, i know it was a carnivorous marsupial and was endangered, lived in Tasmania, but that's pretty much it. I didn't know about their habits, their actual biome, nor did I realize how much of a unique and important animal it is. When the game came out, it wasn't even in my top 50 wants nor in my submission in the first metalist, the top 30, back in December 2020. Granted, we've gotten a lot of animals between now and those times, but it now sits as my third most wanted mammal and my fourth most wanted habitat animal overall.

Kākāpō! I LOVE them and would love to see them join the roster in Planet Zoo, even if it's very unlikely. I knew of them before joining the community, but I've since learned more about their history, conservation status and general trivia about them. They used to be kept as pets by the Māori. European settlers in the 19th century described them as more like a dog than a bird, but now there are only ~248 individuals left in the world. They're the world's only flightless parrot, which is one of the reasons I think they would make a good addition to PZ. Conservationists in New Zealand have done an incredible job saving the species from the brink of extinction, their efforts are being paid off as the population is increasing. Cheers to them.

Here's a pic displaying their size relative to a person.

A little fun fact: Their scientific name Strigops habroptilus translates to "owl-face soft-feather", while their Māori name means "night parrot".

As an Aussie, I've also gained an increased awareness of our native Australian species. One in particular is the Greater Glider. This is a large species of gliding marsupial found in eastern Australia. One interesting thing about them is that display polymorphism. There is a black morph and a white/gray morph. Not to mention their big, furry ears make them look like teddy bears.

For reptiles, Perenties, Lace Monitors, Corroboree Frogs and Frilled-Neck Lizards interest me. I knew of the perentie and of course frilled-neck lizards as a child, because I had a great fascination with reptiles and had even wanted to become a herpetologist. Unfortunately, the exhibit animals do not interest me as much because there's just not much you can do with/for them, but if you're throwing them in in packs of 5 - hell, go for it.

I'm learning something new about animals every time I visit this forum. So many great suggestions that I've never thought much of or had heard about.

Well I certainly learned a lot about the differences between two and three toed sloths this week.

I've always been an animal person, this game has opened my eyes to architecture and good planning in regards to animal welfare, I definitely notice when I visit a substandard facility now.

Both adorable species! Somewhat new to me ;) I've heard of them vaguely but I didn't know they look so cool!
