General / Off-Topic Annihilation [Netflix Movie]

Well, I just got done watching a new movie call Annihilation, with Natalie Portman in it.

Overall, a massive yawn fest full of dull dialogue, and bad acting. Just like most movies with her in. Lol

But.

Two bits got my attention, and mostly redeemed it, as "not a complete waste of time".

The "Mocking Bear".
The trailer made that monster look incredible tacky, like from a bad 1980s horror, which almost put me off watching the movie.

But it's a frikkin Mocking... Bear.
You have to watch it to understand. Creepy is hell.

The second scene was the final bit. Which basically brought back old memories of the doppelganger level from the original Tomb Raider game... Lol
So points just for that.

All in all. Not worth watching. Except for the mocking bear.
Which may or may not give you nightmares.
Lol

A lot of the movie seemed familiar though, like it was heavily inspired by a load of horror games, like Dead Space, and Doom...

How does one "force" another person to watch a film?

Yep it's all fluffy blue ponies on the forum.... the man's a maniac in real life.....

Whilst Alex Garland is never going to be a franchise director or writer he is a tryer. Its a pity here in the UK we wont get the chance to see this in a proper cinema.

I would rather have given him a chance than watching another Black wonder mutant wars galaxy raider , any day.

I did *not* say it was the best film ever. :) I did force you to watch it, I grant. lol.

Yeah, that bear scene was the best in the movie. I hadn't been freaked out that much by a movie monster in a long time.

The ending was what kind of detracted from the overall experience for me. The movie was working quite well as an alien-style monster flick, but then the director decided to go more philosophical and art-house and it kind of fell flat.

Still I think it's definitely worth a watch.

It was that bottle of red that you so kindly uncorked.

I really liked it.

Been thinking about the films themes now for weeks. Films that last for weeks after viewing are a huge thumbs up for me.

It wasn't the best movie I've ever watched I but found it interesting enough. Natalie Portman is rather pleasing on the mark I eyeball. [yesnod]

I would have completely not even known about this film if Red Letter Media had not done a review on it (here):

So i've ear-marked it for it's DVD release as i don't do netflix and it was not in the cinema in the uk. That was one of the main parts of their review, how they choose to put this in American theatres and not in Euro ones, where it probably would have done decently (as we like the more complex/deep stuff over here).

Why does everybody freak out about the bear. I mean, it was really scary (and really good scene adhering to all good horror rules) but the internet is full of "soul-scarring", "most terrifying scene ever in a film", "Screw the bear and people how created it - I'm scarred for life", etc.
And come on, I've seen much scarier things in films. I know we live in a culture of snowflakes but I didn't know it was this bad...

Is the internet full of that? Hadn't noticed. lol.

Yeah, it was a great scene. Was it the most scary scene ever? No. It was memorable though. :)
