Annoying Glitch - Concerning Bounties

So a friend of mine started playing Elite a couple of days ago, so I swallowed a 100LY jump to get back and help them start... and that's when 'IT' happened for the third time.

I decided I'd take one of those mercenary missions to kill some time while he was earning some starter credits and learning the ropes. You know the ones: kill X number of pirates in the target systems.

Now I've attempted these missions a few times, but often failed to leave myself enough time before I was called away into the realms of the living. Of course that's my unfortunate loss. However I have done three of these missions with plenty of time to spare, and here are my results (forgive the lack of system names):

Kill 5 pirates in system X - I take the mission, kill 3 pirates, run into a USS and get the dynamic bit about abandoning the mission, decide not to abandon and kill the following two. Result: Transaction Failed.

Kill 7 pirates in systems X and X - Kill 4 pirates, look at my transaction list. Result: Transaction Failed.

Kill 2 pirates in Eravate - Kill 3 wanted targets around the Nav beacon. 1st turns out to be a pirate, 2nd is just a wanted trader in the wrong place, I kill the 3rd and look at my transactions... Result: Transaction Failed.

Now is this a bug? Am I getting sloppy with my allegiances? Is there something I don't know? I'm still scraping credits together to get my Cobra (nearly there!) but I find it disheartening when you work towards a goal, even if it is small, only to have the rug pulled out from under you. But having been fooled by these Merc Missions 3 times I'm left very cautious about wanting to even try and raise my status through the noble art of bounty hunting. Any thoughts?

Edit: I was WELL within the time limits for each of these missions, the last one of which had a limit of 6 hours and 47 mins at the time of acceptance and was completed in around 15 mins.
