Hardware & Technical Another monitor thread - Best Budget 24" for playing Elite?

Hi all - I don't think this has already been answered (couldn't find it) but apologies if it has.

I am about to buy my first PC gaming rig for 15 years after a long break from gaming and a side-step into PS4 for the benefit of my son. Elite is the primary reason I am buying the rig although that isn't what I told my wife!

Anyway, I've settled on a modest price/performance compromise from Chillblast with a couple of mods on the basic spec to increase the GPU to the 750ti/2GB and the PSU to 600W for future proofing. I'm happy with all that unless someone tells me that it is screamingly wrong.

What I haven't settled on yet is the monitor. Budget is a key factor so I am looking for a compromise that is big enough and good enough to do the game justice without costing the earth or filling the desk - either of which would annoy the wife! I think that 24" is a good compromise and have settled on a couple: IIYAMA Prolite E2483 or BenQ GL2450HM but to be honest I am really out of touch with the gaming monitor market so I would appreciate some advice. Is 24" a good compromise size for enjoying Elite (big enough? bigger than I need?) and are there any other recommends in the £100-£125 price bracket?

Grateful for any advice.

You can pick up 24" Acers for well under 100 quid new. They are not all that bad, but obviously a bit more cash gets you a better screen!

The iiyama has the better refresh rate - but I am perhaps biased as I use an old 19" iiyama.

Thanks Cody - what should I be looking for as a good (or minimum) refresh rate? (I'm also biased because I used to use iiyamas, but that was when monitors were all CRTs!)

Thanks Asp - any particular Acer you can recommend? And is my basic assumption about 24" being the good compromise size valid? Also - what makes a screen 'better' for Elite: size, refresh rate, resolution?

No, it's an LCD flat-panel. I like iiyama, used them for ages - three-year warranty, and excellent customer service!
Strange, IIRC 75Hz & 80Hz were introduced to tube monitors because 60Hz was flickering. LCD & stuff TVs have been 50Hz & 60Hz thingies (oh yeah, recently - as in last 5 years - 100Hz and above too :)), and monitors usually 60Hz (and same way lately 120/144/etc. Hz), 75Hz seems unusual for anything else than tube...

But hey ho - you learn new things every day! :)

Thanks for all the input guys but I'm still a little confused :S What is an ok refresh rate for gaming? Is 60 Hz fine or do I need more? What is the advantage of a higher refresh? I also didn't understand the 'HDMI vs not' comment? I was just assuming that I would use HDMI but is DVI better for games? Sorry if these are idiot questions - just trying to get it right before I spend money

Hi all - still looking for advice if there are any monitor gurus out there or anybody with experience of budget monitors?
