Astronomy / Space Another "New" Planet

Interesting Steve,
looks like we'll have a cloaking device before warp drive,
transporters, food replicators or holo-decks !

Typical of them to develop something that helps them sneak up on the enemy and kill him,
instead of something that that would help the world !

Astronomers have found a new planet :

Could this be why Elite 4 is taking so long ?
Each time they find a new palnet, Frontier have to re-write the game from scratch !!!

Note To Frontier Team - Only Teasing !!! :D

I wonder how much of a problem this is for them though...

I mean assuming that a new Elite goes down the realistic astronomy approach of the Frontier games, what do you do?

Have real stars but fictitious planets? Try to put in as many real planets as you can?

Tricky... :)

I don't think that is an unrealistic expectation, but perhaps a 100 systems that have been discovered, could be possible to do in the game. Certainly I would like to see at least a few highly luminous stellar objects in game. It was always a dream of mine to see Elite IV being good enough to use in say, an astronomy lesson for kids. Wouldn't it be great if our favourite game could be used as genuine educational tool instead of just another space shooter?

I'm not sure, but I think there's a post somewhere about the realism of the stars position from other planets in our solar system.
If anyone's interested, I'll see if I can find it.

Well I think FE2 is already pretty good for close stars. I remember Mr B saying that part of what he wanted to achieve in FE2 was realistic astronomy, and I believe that it will make a return in E4. :)

A quick look at the list of known extrasolar planets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_extrasolar_planets, shows only a few that are close (within a 100 light years)

If E4 took the example of of FE2 and only modelled close star systems, it might make it practical to put all the currently discovered ones in there... though more get discovered all the time

Now if only they would put in black holes.....;)

I want to believe that too

Good find there Marcus! This table is just what DB would need if he is thinking about adding them to his galaxy map

This could be fixed by making the game mod friendly, then we can update it ourselves.

Yes please!

This is cool news. But they could have given it a better name than Colbot 9B or whatever it is.

They shoud call planets things like Splazzmoria
