Another nice interview with David

I hate the format of that website!

First I wondered who's saying what here.
Then i was liek: WHY DO YOU KEEP JELLING AT DAVID?!?!

EDIT: Yes thank you for the link =)

Nice article!

Something caught my eye and I don't know if there is a "lost in translation" moment here, but I really wonder about the following:

David Braben said:
We have planets in it – you can fly your spaceship down to the surface, get out, walk around, get back in and fly off. That will come. We will do it properly with time, it just won't be there on day one. There is so much game even without that, it's untrue. And when that comes, there will be even more game!
Does it mean that they have the tech in place and working, but planetary landings are not done properly in that there is nothing but empty space. Or does it mean that the tech is going to be developed further down the line?

Yes.

Sorry, couldn't resist! :p

Good article, I had no idea David was involved with the Raspberry Pi thingy. :D

He should plug them in the game, perhaps have you replace the damaged parts on your ship, they all have one bolted to the side. If AI's are banned, perhaps these are the only computers available in the year 3200!

Thanks OP +1

Cool link, thanks. Nice to see David let it all hang out with Pi. Certainly one of those cool little tech gadgets I've been tempted to play around with - I can certainly use the excuse of teaching my daughter computer science when she's a bit older... Like maybe next Christmas when she's 4... :D Had no idea DB was involved with Pi either - the cool facts one can learn here while sipping an after-dinner tea...

They have tech and it's working. Whole reason not having landings yet because they have to fill planets with plants, animals, people, etc. If you want to see how planets look without them, look to Infinity or Pioneer videos.Generating believable landscapes isn't that hard. Problem is with filling planets with stuff. Even planets without atmosphere could have stuff down there which needs to be addressed.

So basic planetary landing is already coded:

Wow. Take your time FD.

Do it right, don't do it quickly just to shoehorn it in.

Have high expectations for SPL, and think it will really make or potentially break the game.

Genuinely excited about what we'll eventually see. :)

Actually, generating believable landscapes is incredibly hard! And for the record, I don't think the landscapes in Space Engine or Pioneer look even a fraction as good as Infinity.

Just because Flavien Brebion is a programming wizard making it look easy, doesn't mean it's easy.

The point DB is making is that he wants to do the SPL part of it properly before release. I totally agree with him that it's the best way to do it.

Generating believable landscapes is incredibly hard... generating believable flora, fauna & civilization on top of that is even harder.

I think this may be a misinterpretation - I'm pretty certain his point is that the planets are there and the eventual game will have landing/footwalking. Certainly we'd be wasting everyone's time if we were busy sorting that stuff out when all the space flight stuff's still in alpha.

Thanks for clarifying that Ben. I'd really just assumed there was some "placeholder" code at the moment - but nothing really playable.

Thank you Ben Parry; This gives us all a little better view of the current state of E:D SPL:)

It's good to see DB's focus on 'game', rather than graphics, immersion, depth, fidelity, or any of those overused buzzwords.

Nice little interview with David (linked in the OP). Especially the mention of the Raspberry Pi.

My 9 yr old daughter used her pocket money and Christmas money to buy her self a Raspberry Pi starter pack. (Buying it with her own money has made it very special to her).

She managed to get it all plugged in, installed the o/s and other programs, connected to the house network, all by herself. She has already written a couple of programs using Scratch (a simplified visual programming app that they also use at school). One of the games is simply moving a ball around the 2d screen into targets to score a point and avoiding moving blocks (that end the game if you touch them). As a final touch to make it more challenging she inverted the cursor keys (up moves you down left moves you right etc). I have to admit, I am enjoying explaining how loops, variables and If statements work and how avoid repeated code (I have never been able to discuss this particular subject with anyone in my family before).

We are both very impressed with the Pi.
