another one bites the dust

As I was happily mining away in solo trying to get enough credits to buy something worthy I get jumped and asked to give up my cargo.
but before I can do anything like say pull up my menu and eject my cargo.
I'm fired on instantly shields are down hull integrity drops drastically and incredibly my boost just happens to not work at the moment,
the one thing I count on to run from an attack. I have out run numerous attacks by boosting away shields down and all many times.
this time was definitely not the same. this seemed like a pre programmed scripted kill that got me in the beta once and is a total game killer.
I can see there was no way for me to get out of it. the game just deals you up a death at random times. quite discouraging really.

I must say that as much as I do like the game, the frustration just out ways the satisfaction. sure its very technically challenging, and that keeps you busy for awhile. but its just to laborious and not gratifying enough to keep going day after day. I'm sure that future DLC's will improve the situation. but unfortunately after about a month I'm already burnt out on the grind to much to keep playing.

If you are mining and get attacked you may not have enough power to run all your modules. You need to shut down your mining lasers, cargo scoop etc then you will find you can boost. Also as soon as I am scanned I take off. Once scanned (except by security ships) you WILL be attacked!

(shrug)

Not sure what to tell ya man - you're a miner, you KNOW you are going to be attacked. Especially if you're in a smaller ship.

Try a few things:

- As soon as you see a scan notification, retract everything and engage that FSD. Boost away if possible to keep them form killing you.
- Consider upscaling your ship to be able to take some hits and buy you some time if you can't react.
- Pair with another commander to give you a chance to fight off the target, or work with a bounty hunter for protection - I'd happily guard you in belts for a cut of the profits and take the responsibility of owing you less of a cut should your ship get destroyed due to my inability to defend you. I'm sure I'm not alone.

But in all seriousness, this isn't going to change, and it shouldn't. As a miner, you're easy prey - a stationary non-combat ship with at least 1 hard point less for weapons. What do you expect here, a game that lets you just accumulate wealth with no challenge? What's the point of that?

Relax, re-evaluate your position and don't be afraid to ask for help if you're not understanding how to make this situation be more favorable for you in the future.

Apre programmed scripted kill that got me in the beta once

I've never run into any pre-programmed scripted kills. Even the final training scenario ("Sidewinder vs 10 waves of doom") is beatable (I haven't ever managed, but I've seen a video) and the notorious "3 Cobras jump you" incident could be done. What scenario do you mean?

Boost didn't work because your cargo scoop was still deployed.

Back in the day, when spaceships were flown by Real Men And Women, activating Engine Boost meant that you boosted. Then someone pressed "boost" inside a space station... and wrote a letter of complaint to Faulcon de Lacy, who disabled it when gear/scoop was deployed.

Back in the day, when spaceships were flown by Real Men And Women, ramming the throttle to 100% gave you 100% throttle. Then someone obliterated a canister of gold because they were over-speed... and wrote a letter of complaint to Zorgon Peterson, who limited throttle to 50% when gear/scoop was deployed.

Now, when you're attacked by a pirate while collecting mineral fragments, your speed is capped, and boost is disabled - to make sure you don't hurt yourself! ;)

Being serious for a sec, any time you have a suspicious ship appear on the radar while mining (which happens a lot currently), retract your cargo scoop, switch fire groups off mining laser to Real Guns, and rig for trouble. :D

Depending on your controller setup you can try creating a macro. Either on the stick, keyboard or mouse. Im using VA anyway so I created it there. One of them will deploy the lasers, open the scoop and put powers to the weapons as well as turning on the light. The other I trigger when scanned stows the hard points closes the scoop and puts 4 pips to the engine and 2 in the systems. One command and I'm ready to run. If you can make macros like that, i found them quite handy

Search for a system that's well protected. Find an asteroid field that has a couple of security ships. I'm currently on the border of the empire and there are lots of pristine fields with security everywhere.

I've been jumped by pirates while mining, even when I was completely empty and had only just arrived. I eventually gave up mining because of this but it was fun at the time and I was hardly rigged for combat to effectively deal with the situation. I never had a problem getting away though.

It's annoying when things like this happen but hopefully the OP doesn't feel to discouraged by this setback. The way I see it is this:

Player-------> Setback--------> Goal

Goal is whatever you want it to be. Make a million, get an Anaconda or whatever. The trick is to not get too hung up on the goal and try to avoid or roll with the setbacks once they occur. If you can eliminate the Goal aspect of things all the better as the game doesn't feel like a grind then.

Suggestion: Do not mine in Extraction Zones. You do not need to go to an extraction zone to mine. All you need to do is go to any where in the ring and get close enough to drop out of FSD. You will be in the ring and NPC's will not spawn since they only spawn in a radius of 40km from the extraction zone marker. It also means you can mine alone if you want and players can not enter your instance unless they follow your wake into the instance or get lucky.

Safe mining.

This is all good advice, just to clarify immediately upon being scanned I usually retract cargo scoop just to be safe. that's why I got so frustrated.
it seemed as if it was a setup kill with no way to avoid it. a situation I have survived many times with all the good advice supplied above. maybe this is a way to discourage players from only playing in solo mode I hope. thank you for all the positive input.

To discourage from playing in solo, eh?
I haven't played solo since Beta but when I did it seemed like I was only earning a quarter of the credits I had been earning in Open (bounty hunting.)
Personally I've never been attacked while mining but I only mine ring clusters not extraction sites.
I'd hate it if FDEV is increasing the risk for players in Solo. I can understand capping profits (less risk=less reward) but intentionally increasing NPC aggressiveness would be wrong.

I was mining, and had a suspicious ship fly up to me. I tossed 4 pips to shields.
He said he wanted to know what was in my hold. I retracted my cargo scoop and switched to weapons.
He said it was time for me to die.

I laughed while his lasers bounced off my shields and swung around to face him.
And he was saying that this couldn't possibly happen to him 10 seconds later when he became one with the space dust.

I'm in a Cobra Mk. III.

Be alert and improve reaction time.

If ever I see a wake in a funny place near rings when doing some PvP piracy, it's always "arrr, me hearties, lets see what we've caught". Much easier than trying to pirate in the massive scrum of bounty hunters. That siad, this may be rare, and is probably a good idea on the more far out sectors.

AS this happened to me in my early mining career as well, I now stop mining the minute some thing appears on my radar, boost away 2 -3 times and start again, I had to as my haulier had no Weapons.lol, and like another post here, I to have a Cobra III, with three beam lasers, missiles, so when I get scanned if they say this wont hurt, or what have you got. they Die..lol
