Newcomer / Intro Another Stuck Noob looking for help (and people to fly with)

Hi everyone,
I really don't mean to be downbeat or anything but I fear I am either simply not getting this game or that it really is just naff - I hope it's just the former so maybe someone can help me?

I have been playing the game about a week now, perhaps for a total of about 10-15 hours. In that time I have managed to achieve the square route of nothing (other than the training tutorials and what I can only describe as a lot of aimless flying around.

I get the idea of trading but given that I am an absolute new starter it just doesn't seem to offer a good margin of credits for the time I am spending doing it.

What I really want to do is some shooting (forgive me for sounding like some member of the instant gratification club here). My trouble is that all the missions for bounty hunting say go to a system (often plural) and find your guy. The trouble is that I just can't get my head around the fact that I need to spend my free time cruising around systems that may or not hold my target in the off chance I bump into him.
- is the really right as it just seems like a total waste of time to me, surely I have missed something?

Also is there a way of getting the nav computer to automatically set up a route for you to fly when it says 'go here, do this'. Often 'here' is some random name or number collection you need to remember to then find in the galaxy map - again surely there is a better/quicker way of doing this?

I am an experienced gamer with long/steep curve games (advanced combat flight sims, eve online etc) but I just can't seem to get along with this game that really does seem to have potential. Trouble is I have a baby and my gaming time is limited to maybe an hour or to once or twice a week. I don't want to spend this time aimlessly floating around in space hoping to bump into a target.

All I want to do is do some combat relayed stuff and not waste a disproportionate amount of time bouncing through the visual space - especially for a couple of 1000 credits (the problem with many of the trade missions).

Can someone help me and PLEASE tell me j haven't wasted my money (and more importantly - time) with this game? The tutorials the game provides do not provide enough detail of this area and user generated tutorials don't seem very well put together on this front either.

I would add that (on advice from the game and some user guides I am using the solo game atm).

Final note, if there are any noobie friendly groups out there that are looking for a total game noob but an otherwise very serious and experienced online gamer please contact me as I am looking to get into the MMO side of the game ASAP (happy to try anything except pirating for now).

Thanks guys,
-Sharpe

Hi!

There is plenty of shooting to be had outside of missions: Just head to any Nav Beacon or Ressource Extraction Site (at ring planets) - any and every "Wanted" is your target.
The bounties will add up quite nicely - Just be careful and don't shoot the cops/other ships ;)

As for missions... sadly, that's how they work (for now). Wait for USS to spawn and hope for the randomNumberGenerator to roll your objective. You can, however, kill your throttle when in supercruise; that way, you can hop right in instead of having to travel to the USS.

As was suggested, go to a nav point or extraction site and wait for wanted crims to jump in. You'll soon be earning k's of credits! :)

There might even be a Cmdr there already if you play in Open, and you can play some bounty hunt round robin..pretend you are in a wing together, its great fun :)

Hi Purf,
Thanks for your quick reply: I tried doing this buy the local security people just shot me and killed me and it added a bounty to my name so I assumed this was not the way to go (PS I was carefull to shoot only ones that came up as 'wanted' on my scanner). Did I do something wrong as I tried it 3 times.

You prolly accidently did shoot the police. Its easy to do if you are not especially carefull. In the next update (1.1.) police will have some damage tolerance.
Maybe you have a bounty on your head already? Check at contacts in a station, pay it off if true.

Hello and welcome to Elite Dangerous. I'm some kind of ED noob as well, but getting along fine.

Trust me, it gets better once you've figured out the trade mechanics, hunting missions and such. Search around for awesome trade routes and rare items. I travelled from my starting system to some 160 light years away to get to a system with rare items (they are in yellow in Commodities market), and travelled again 160 light years away to sell until, and I repeated it until I got myself a Hauler with slightly bearable cargo hold.

I know the feeling of absolute emptiness at first, but it's worth the efforts.

A little advice though, you might not want to try the 150k++ hunting missions at first as you might come face to face with an Anaconda that will destroy you in two shots. If you are somewhere nearby Zaonce or 39 Tauri, look me up, maybe we can do some hunting together.

We all started with 1,000 credits, but now I'm racking up 600k-800k per trip in a new Cobra.

I was about your neck of the woods yesterday! :D.

How do you add friends in this anyway?
