So idea for far colonization claims that tries to work in the beta system/BGS. If you look at the forums you'll find strong opinions about range. Some people want more, some say it will be ruinous. My hope is neither side has ultimate say. I'm for more range yet can see the concerns of the other argument. I'm of the mindset that it's good to integrate both sides of the debate, appeal to as many players as possible. I also know it takes work to add, even change, new features so trying to keep this simple.
Suggestion is allow people to STAKE one system at a time, up to 100 or so ly. Not the same as a claim. It reserves a system for you but you have to get within 15 ly of it in time to claim it. This would allow people to go for far systems but have to work with the 15 ly limit and BGS to get there. The time limit to make the stake into a claim and how often it can be done? Up to the think tank that goes over the game metrics. I would veer toward less so it's not exploited/people have to think about what they want because it's kind of a special thing, maybe once a week or even month.
I would almost prefer staking to flat claim range increases. This way you get your further range, a system you want and it can't be randomly taken, yet you really have to work for it. Maybe even more grind but worth it if the commander is committed to their stake. Certainly more hours on the servers so hopefully the hamsters are in good shape.
I'd also add, if staking becomes a thing, give players points for range increases or construction points if they contribute to building other's systems. How many points players get for helping others is a matter for the devs to figure out. I believe that the incentive baked into the gameplay loop would get a lot of people to help strangers/make neighbors. Even create feedback loops, "This random commander helped me, I'm gonna help them!"
