There must be some logic, but I'm not sure what it is. I seemed to get to Knight from scratch in what seemed like only a few hours.
The ranking missions come pretty regularly in my case. (Not often mind you, I still have to do a lot of missions, but they come in pretty regular intervals)
I think it helps to do missions in different systems. Not just keep doing them in one and the same system. At a certain point you seem to max out your reputation with that faction, and doing missions won't count towards
your rank anymore. I always do a couple in one system, then a couple in another. (Only trade/delivery missions and the missions for which you don't get any money, only rep)
In the meantime I do some pew-pew in RES sites in allied systems and turn in the bounties. (I don't mean alliance, I mean Empire, since I'm allied with them btw)
Mixing it up a little seems to work pretty fine in my case. ymmv

Thanks guys for all your tips. I've ranked up to knight pretty fast last night. I've been doing a couple more missions today. I think i'll go bounty hunt for a bit and try again. Maybe more Rank missions will appear. I will also try completing missions at different station/systems around if it takes a while.

Thank you guys, i finally got the Baron rank and the Clipper!
After doing a ton of missions for several station two days strait i was about to give up.
Even did a lot of bounty hunting.
So i decided to sell my vulture, get into a type-7 since i wanted to trade a bit and forget
about the clipper.
Then i go to NU and started trading from there. Load up my first cargo.
Jumped into a close-by system to sell my cargo and there it was, in a station
i never visited, The So Mystical And Legendary Naval Mission!
Sold my T7 on the spot, completed the mission and bought the clipper an Hour ago.
Ok, i might be a little over-exited now
Time to concentrate on making money now
