Currently there is no reason to hire more than one crew member.
I propose that we use these crew to be in multiple places at once, such that each player can potentially be in four places in the galaxy.
Basically this would work by adding an option to switch viewpoints between the different members you've hired. So say you go to Colonia, you could hire a crew mate, switch to their perspective, and switch ships. Then you can change perspective back to your actual character and fly back to the bubble. Once back in the bubble, if you ever wanted to do something colonia related, switching to that character would put you back there. So you can effectively have 4 pilots that all share the same bank, and there's a penalty for the convenience in the form of their salary so it will balance.
If you have one crew member dedicated to exploration and they're floating in space, choosing to fire them will mean losing the ship they currently occupy and their data as well. You would get a warning about that.
Crew not assigned to their own ships are assumed to be onboard your current vessel and can be turned into SLF pilots or assigned to any ship at a station where you are currently docked. Crew elsewhere in the galaxy who are docked can be fired without losing the ship, or transferred (with or without the ship) to your current location. This includes the transfer of your main pilot. The only thing you can't do is fire yourself.
Incidentally this would partially fix the current problem of players only being able to have one save file and being permanently stuck in whatever role they've chosen- One of the main reasons people stop playing. They get stuck in a role and they dont want to invest the time it takes to get out of that role to pursue a different interest, so they lose interest entirely.
