The last few days have been reflective for me, time of year, malarial madness, etc... for more than one reason or another anyway. I'm breaking forum rules by posting this here no doubt but I need to post these thoughts for a lost friend. In doing so, I beg the Mod's indulgence for an old soldier.
He died on the 3rd of March in 1984 in some hot foreign place we had no right to be. A Highlander by birth and by the Grace of his god. He took my rightful place across the river Styx, a debt I owe but cannot pay.
Kenny, I'll share your glass when I get there. Until then, I'll pay the price for the life you gave that saved mine. I miss you my friend...it's been over 34 years since we laughed together and time has gone slower because of it. The coins to cover my eyes in payment to the ferryman are aye ready. I'm tired, my brother. The memory of your death has haunted my soul every day since...So much so that sometimes when I feel lost, I long to cross the river to greet those faces, friend and foe alike that I see every night in the dark of my dreams because I know they'll smile, welcome me as a brother and nod their acceptance.
Some day I'll have earned the right and will have paid in full for the peace I crave... but that's not yet.
This song because we were 'Heelanders' and Clansmen of MacGregor both by birth and by right. Separated by one hour when we took our first breath and we should have been together in death as you breathed your last... but the gods of men are fickle.
I am the last of our little band of Immortals... and I'll do my penance here, left behind so that someone in this life will remember our names. We'll sing songs of our Homeland again Brother, and make those very gods themselves feel ashamed.
Sgt Kenny MacGregor, 1959-1984. My friend and brother.
