Anti-Wishes

Ok, let me be the big boogeyman and create this topic.

Name 5 animals you DON’T want to take up future spots on the zoo dlc lists, and why.

1: African Leopard
2: Asiatic Lion
3: Common Brown or Black Bears
4: Another Giraffe
5: Another Zebra

I’ll add the whys after work.

What are yours?

Oh, I could list all the similar animals like more tigers, lions, zebras and what not, but I tried to look at the META wishlist and see popular animals that I dont care about to make it a bit interesting:

1. Pallas Cat - Sorry for anyone that likes them, but I find them very ugly and offputting (and I have a cat irl, so I am not biased against cats, lol). I cannot really explain this one...Is there a phobia from Pallas Cats? Because I might have it.
2. Saiga - Very surprised to see them with so many votes, I just cannot see myself using them as they are extremely rare in captivity.
3. Walrus - I just do not care about them for some reason
4. African Leopard - please not any more big cats.
5. Black Rhino - I would be totally fine with just the White Rhino.

You can stone me later.

Easy.
  1. Kakapo: There are good reasons why it isn't kept in zoos IRL. If they picked this for what would probably be our only NZ animal, I'd be hella peeved.
  2. African leopard: The obsession with this animals stems from three places; it's the most visible leopard in pop-culture, it's one of the "Big Five", and it was in Zoo Tycoon. None of these are relevant to Planet Zoo, or at least they shouldn't be.
  3. Another crocodilian: I've had my fill. Though I do love the spectacled caiman, I still see it as a wasted slot (it should have been in the Aquatic Pack instead of the dwarf caiman, which is a huge nuisance to actually use).
  4. Another wallaby: As boring as it sounds, the only macropod I still want is the eastern grey kangaroo. Nothing against wallabies, I just got the one I wanted and I'm good now.
  5. Any more specifically North American animals: Again, I'm only speaking from my own person, and this isn't reflective of any trends I've noticed, but North American animals don't play a role in any zoos I'm deeply familiar with beyond American alligators and bison, so I'm pretty much done with that region.
Honourable mentions:
  • Gibbons: Still think the lar was a wasted slot. I'm fine with a second gibbon, but in some other pack, and preferably a different species (white-cheeked is my go-to).
  • Monitor lizards: Instead of selling us a remaster of the Nile monitor, they should have done that in the free update and given us something else in the Tropical Pack. I do want an Australian monitor (preferably the lace monitor) but it's not very high on my priority list.
  • Tamarins and marmosets: I adore these monkeys, but I feel like the board skews towards making them WE animals, which I don't want.
  • Most animals that aren't in captivity: There a couple of exceptions, such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, but my general rule of thumb is that if an animal isn't at least successful in one collection then it shouldn't be in the game.

Most primates except lemurs and a select few like the golden snub nose. I just don't really care for them otherwise.

Edit:

Domestic animals, period. They take up spots of wild animals I would rather have for a zoo game.

Im gonna exclude all random subspecies that dont differ meaningfully morphologically:
1. Arabian Sand Cat: Redundant animal with its niche allready filled by the more iconic fenec fox. A desert pack really does not need a carnivoran, but this guy is allmost guranteed to be in it cause cute cat = marketable even if its boring and unnessecary
2. Kiwi: Speaking of boring, an animal with panda level of rarety and prestige but none of the unique building opportunitys.
Its the by far most restrictive bird an island pack could bring, completly outclassed regarding usability by animals like the criwned pidgeons or hawaian goose. A super specific animal allmost without general use being the only animal from a place thats irrelevant for a zoo game
3. Pine Marten: While i would still be happy with it, its simply a huge missed opportunity as the beech and yellow throated marten both have far more utility, as the pine marten is exclusive to european forests while the beech is found there, but also in urban areas, mountain ranges, scrub lands and semi deserts across the northern middle east and central asia with the yellow throated being more strinking visually and found in SEA, Northern Asia and the himalaya.
4. Wild Yak: Cringe, no second wild Water Buffalo thank you
5. Sloth Bear: While a cool animal on its own, in the context of the game its completly unnessecary. Rarest bear in zoos, overlaps in range with the sun bear and asiatic black bear, looks like a cross between the two if not just like a small shaggy asiatic black bear. Only reason why adding it would make sense would be to complete all bears but when we dont have a single species of waterfowl in the game i couldnt care less about completing all bears

Top of my 'don't wants' is the shoebill.

The capture of wild shoebill chicks for sale to zoos is a major cause of their decline in parts of Africa. They have only ever been successfully captive bred on two occassions - perhaps not surprising, as most shoebills in captivity are hand-reared birds that have imprinted on humans and so don't recognise other shoebills as potential partners. Considering that most (if not all) shoebills in zoos are the product of smuggling of wild birds, less-than-reputable zoos are a cause of their threatened status and their terrible breeding success IRL, having them appear in Planet Zoo and just be freely breeding is something I would personally find quite distasteful.

Runners up are:
Giant eland - this species has basically vanished from captivity now. Give me the common eland or give me nothing.
Hamadryas baboon - there's something about them I just find revolting (perhaps the flesh-toned skin on the face, so it looks like human skin stretched over a dog skull). Would much prefer a gelada, or even a Guinea or olive baboon over these.

I have no real specific species I do not want to have in game but groups:

1. Pure Marine mammals or sharks: I Just do not would like to have them within the Game.

2. Subspecies or even more Subpopulations of animals already in-game like Asiatic Lion, Eurasian Brown Bear, African Leopard, ...

3. Petting Zoo animals: For every domestic animal there is also a wild species open which are much more attractive to me

4. Fish Tanks: Nothing against fishes but this would Open again a new exhibit topic before the Long awaited flying birds are coming to the Game (which Perhaps could happen at Summer)

5. Overusing the Walkthrough Exhibits with other mammals. I got the problems with the Sloth but even smaller Monkeys should be habitat animals in my opinion.

Edit: Forgotten and above everything within the list I do not want extinct or Fantasy species within Planet Zoo. There are other Games around which can use these better in my opinion.

Of the animals I see regularly requested (and totally excluding extinct animals and marine mammals), the animals I have no interest in are:

Highland cow - even among domestic cows, I have others I’d want more, but I don’t want them either.
Shetland pony - as above…. Even if I was interested in domesticates (at this point) there are innumerable better options. Also, @KönigDerKaffeebohnen dissed the kiwi, so I’m gonna do the same for one of his favourites.
For the other three, I’ll choose species that add almost nothing, in terms of variety, to the game.
Another zebra
Another giraffe
Another tiger

1: Eurasian Brown Bear - it looks almost identical to the Grizzly Bear, there are much better bear options, and we really don't need a third brown bear species.
2: Black Rhinoceros - I guarantee that if it weren't for this animal's conservation status, almost nobody would want it. It looks pretty similar to the Southern White Rhinoceros too.
3: Petting zoo animals - they just don't appeal to me at all, and with a finite number of animal slots remaining, any sort of petting zoo animal would feel like a wasted slot.
4: Any second Zebra - we don't need another zebra, period. None of them are unique enough from the Plains Zebra to justify their inclusion.
5: Any wild Rabbit species - rabbits just aren't interesting to me, and apart from the taxonomical representation I really don't see what they would bring.

Based counter diss
Btw what cattle would your prefer over the scottish?
My guesses would be the watussi or the yak for being more excotic breeds, but would love to hear
