Ship Builds & Load Outs Any good fedral dropship combat builds?

So, ever since I saw the fedral dropship I made it my goal to own one. After grinding endlessly for both the Reputation and the money, I finally managed to snag one.(Wings 1.2 19 mil) Now although its combat proweness is quite decent, I just cant seem to get that range that I want out of it. The Elite Wiki and others have said it can go up to around 19Ly but I am just not getting it. What can I do to get this thing to have both great firepower with decent range on the FSD? A bounty hunter should be able to go the distance for his prey.

This ship is classified at a multi-role ship.

I had a similar story. I wanted one for ages . . . And loved it. Am now flying a Python but it doesn't have as much character and the range isn't much better.

If you go with all D class class (except A FSD) and 6A shield - you can still have A class KWS, large beam and two medium gimballed pulses, you can get around 17Ly which is ok.

I think for 19 you'd have to drop shields and weapons . . . 😊

If you can survive with around 14-15 you can have a really solid combat build.

Edit have you looked at Shipyard?

I guess I'll just have to settle for another ship or wait for another Federal type ship to drop. It seems like frontier gave us the shaft on the dropship. Its a ship that I personally think it needs to be looked over again. The imperial Clipper and courier both have better jump ranges.

You do know it is a troop transport right? It is the bus of the galaxy.

That doesn't seem fair. I can't remember the last bus I saw armed to the teeth. It's more like an Infantry Fighting Vehicle in spaaaace *waves arms*. Not that it makes much argument for a change in jump range as armored transports generally have slow and steady speeds.

From what I had read about it, including the actual description of the ship itself on the wiki page for ED ships is that the ship is best utilized with Wings. It is supposed to be a tank, but needs support from smaller ships since the shields MJ is terrible for a ship that size and it basically manuevers as efficiently as an unpowered brick in space.

However, from what I can tell, if you are proficient in flying and combat, you can really put a huge dent in anything out there flown by NPCs. You will probably get your ego handed to you in PvP with that ship without wing support... although, really, I am not much into the PvP, so that is wholly an assumption on my part.

You would be better served spending that 19 million kitting out a Vulture. I have one, most who do combat have one or aspire to acquire one, and boy is that ship something of a wonder in combat.

I was lamenting the inadequacies of the Drop-ship on another tread and came up with what I think would be great. A civilian Drop-ship.

You could still buy the military version with the rank requirement. But you could also buy a civilian version of the Drop-ship - maybe a little more cargo space and a little less armor to give it a greater jump range and shield MJ and without the rank requirement.

We have 2 versions of the Diamondback, so it would sit OK with FD thinking I would guess. It would be easy to implement as it would still look like a Drop-ship, but the internals would be tweaked as well as the weight.

Here's my current build.

I haven't had it for very long yet, but I'm beginning to feel well in it and am learning to make use of its strengths. I changed from a fully gimbaled setup with 1 large beam and 4 medium multi cannons to a setup with 2 medium beams and 1 large pulse, and now to the fixed pulse and burst lasers. These work a lot better in my experience since they don't drain the capacitor so quickly. And the dropship is quite agile in combat if you work actively with the pip settings, so keeping targets in sight is not difficult. When I have enough money to upgrade the power plant, I want to change the large pulse to a burst laser as well. I'll probably replace the autocannons with rail guns then. Would like to try turrets, but I have no experience with them at all...if anyone has tried them, I'd love to get some report of if/how well they work :)

Overall I'm happy with the ships performance. My only bane are NPCs with turrets...especially other dropships and clippers. Also was interdicted by a deadly anaconda which made me run (but that was when I just got the ship, and the multi cannon setup didn't work well against the conda at all). Turrets will eat through the fairly weak shields very quickly. Also, wings can be quite annoying, forcing quick use of those shield cells. Otoh, even if the shield fails, the ship can take a good amount of punishment (watch your powerplant tho ;)
