Any help?

So I was in my only ship which was a python with a worth of roughly 155 million in credits and I was cruising back to a system to turn in some missions. Upon arrival to the system I noticed a military instalation in my navigation tab and thought "huh, I wonder what that is." So I made what was going to be a quick stop to check it out. Once I realized that I can't dock or interact with it I went to leave. However, before I could without warning the "friendly" AI ships decided to end me. And since I don't have the funds to buy it back I was forced to start in a sidewinder. Just out of curiosity, if I save enough for the insurance can I buy it back? Or must I effectively resart?

You can go 500k into debt from memory, just the risk of flying without sufficient Insurance.

Sorry to break it to you, but I'm afraid you must start from the beginning. If you can't afford the insurance you are forced back in the sidewinder without any means to buy back your ship other than working your way back up to where you was.

Take heart though - many people find it refreshing to start the game anew. You also have aquired lots of skills and knowledge about the game and the galaxy that will help you get back into your seat much faster than before.

It is harsh, I know - I have done something similar myself before, but I assure you, once you are back up there you will look back on to this and smile :)

Good luck CMDR.

The debt is the 'loan' provided by the pilots fed if you don't have enough cash on hand to pay the insurance amount.

But it can be far, far higher than 500k. The amount you have available as max loan is based on your highest pilot fed ranking. (e.g. Tycoon trader or whatever)

It was long, long ago when I last saw a loan screen as flying without fully funded insurance = stupid (unless deliberately playing iron man mode) --> but at Tycoon trade rank, my max loan was ~8-9 million.

So the OP not only decided to fly without adequate insurance, but had nearly zero cash on hand. Reasoning = by the time you can earn and buy 155 million Python, it is safe bet the player is at least middle or higher rank in one of the 3 fed ranks. That translates to something like 4-8 MM loan

155MM python = 7.75MM insurance

The loan wouldn't pay entire amount unless OP was Tycoon or Elite, but even at middle rank he should have had 3-5MM loan and need only couple more million cash to make it.

Not condemning the poor guy, but it seems fairly deliberate choice to not only ignore insurance but fly so broke that you don't even have enough to cover what the loan doesn't fully do.

Yes, some basic things to learn - assuming the OP is still in the mood to learn things, rather than simply quitting.

- Rule 1: Never fly without insurance, unless you really, really don't mind facing the consequences, or you enjoy the thrill of actual fear of losing everything if you do something stupid.

- Rule 2: If you must ignore Rule 1, research how much of a loan the Bank of Zaonce is prepared to extend you. For higher-ranked players, it can be several million, which is enough to afford a Python rebuy.

- Rule 3: If you must ignore Rules 1 and 2, BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. Don't take missions above your rank, don't visit anarchies, don't go bounty-hunting in a HazRES, don't visit a nav beacon or RES while carrying cargo, don't visit combat zones at all, and whatever you do, don't ever say "Hey, I've never seen one of those things before, I wonder what happens if I get closer". Do things that are almost risk-free, like short-range (in-bubble) exploration, or land at a surface port and take the buggy out to farm wanted skimmers and salvageable cargo.

- Rule 4: If you must ignore Rules 1, 2 and 3, then at least have a second, standby ship parked somewhere not too far away from Newbie Space, so you've got something you can fall back into rather than fall all the way back to a Sidey. Don't put all your eggs in one Python.

A few months ago, as I was halfway through upgrading my Python, I literally ran out of money. Had 7 credits left in the bank. I ignored Rule 1. I was unaware of Rule 2. I did not ignore Rules 3 or 4. When I lost my Python to an NPC pirate I thought I could take on, I had to take a 7 million credit loan, offered me thanks to my Pioneer explorer rating - a few thousand credits more, and I wouldn't have been able to afford the rebuy even with the loan (this was sheer luck on my part). I immediately switched back to my trusty Asp, and flew that until I could actually afford not to ignore Rule 1 in the Python any more.

With the mandatory 10% loan repayment scheme, I had to earn 70 million credits before it was finally paid off. It took weeks. Loan repayment is painful, but nowhere near as painful as getting into a Sidey in LHS 3447.
