Yes, some basic things to learn - assuming the OP is still in the mood to learn things, rather than simply quitting.
- Rule 1: Never fly without insurance, unless you really, really don't mind facing the consequences, or you enjoy the thrill of actual fear of losing everything if you do something stupid.
- Rule 2: If you must ignore Rule 1, research how much of a loan the Bank of Zaonce is prepared to extend you. For higher-ranked players, it can be several million, which is enough to afford a Python rebuy.
- Rule 3: If you must ignore Rules 1 and 2, BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. Don't take missions above your rank, don't visit anarchies, don't go bounty-hunting in a HazRES, don't visit a nav beacon or RES while carrying cargo, don't visit combat zones at all, and whatever you do, don't ever say "Hey, I've never seen one of those things before, I wonder what happens if I get closer". Do things that are almost risk-free, like short-range (in-bubble) exploration, or land at a surface port and take the buggy out to farm wanted skimmers and salvageable cargo.
- Rule 4: If you must ignore Rules 1, 2 and 3, then at least have a second, standby ship parked somewhere not too far away from Newbie Space, so you've got something you can fall back into rather than fall all the way back to a Sidey. Don't put all your eggs in one Python.
A few months ago, as I was halfway through upgrading my Python, I literally ran out of money. Had 7 credits left in the bank. I ignored Rule 1. I was unaware of Rule 2. I did not ignore Rules 3 or 4. When I lost my Python to an NPC pirate I thought I could take on, I had to take a 7 million credit loan, offered me thanks to my Pioneer explorer rating - a few thousand credits more, and I wouldn't have been able to afford the rebuy even with the loan (this was sheer luck on my part). I immediately switched back to my trusty Asp, and flew that until I could actually afford not to ignore Rule 1 in the Python any more.
With the mandatory 10% loan repayment scheme, I had to earn 70 million credits before it was finally paid off. It took weeks. Loan repayment is painful, but nowhere near as painful as getting into a Sidey in LHS 3447.
