Horizons Any hints on how to best do a base infiltration mission?

Hi guys,

So I decided to try & do a mission where you had to scan a data point at a settlement (a Mission type I definitely feel needs to be available for Outposts in space, btw) & needless to say it did *not* go well. I randomly went around activating data points, & sadly I triggered the security system. Then I had to high-tail it out of there before I got killed. So I was wondering if people have tips on how I can quickly find the specific data point that I'm looking for?

Look for turret controls/power and the skimmer controls. Scan/blow those up, and you can take your sweet time looking for proper data point without harrassment.

Normally these missions require you to scan listed data point i.e. data point attached to turret.
So IF you are able drive around base find all the data points before scanning any. Public scan be scanned without upsetting anyone. Also you might find that data point is behind doors/barriers which need you to scan security data point to open. This will set off base defences but will mean you know where likely your data point you need for mission will be.

If you are unable to enter base without defences shooting, fly by to get layout (Even F10 sceen shot) as you can get clear before fined or shot at. Also remember debug camera to get an overhead view of base.

Knocking out power supplies for turret and the skimmer controls, limited as seem to regenerate?

One further point: when you have found the data point you think is required by the mission take a minute or two to plan your escape. As soon as you complete the scan everything will become hostile.

-If your ship is parked outside the base work out the best route back to it at high speed.
-If you have dismissed it just work out a clear exit path to open ground.
-If you are on an elevated platform don't bother looking for the ramp, just drive off the edge in the direction you want and use your boost to cushion the drop.
-If you don't intend to exchange fire with skimmers or turrets, but just run, put 4 pips in SYS and 2 in ENG for maximum protection.
-Set up repair by synthesis in the right hand panel (if you have the materials), so that if you take too much damage you can flip across and do a quick hull fix.

Finally, if your SRV is destroyed you will be back in the ship in orbit, but as long as you completed the scan the mission update will be there. Just fly away and pick up the cash!

Another excellent base assault tutorial video as featured in last weeks newsletter ..

None of the people scan the five data points. and get the Intel Package in these videos.

You don't get many credits for an Intel package but I wondered if they might have some sort of effect in Powerplay.

So I've just begun infiltrating outposts myself. I've had a couple successful runs on easy ones. But recently running into the very large outposts with multiple levels and security barriers or walls that close on you and trap you in when you cross the red squared in trespass area. Do the power generators need to be destroyed to drop them or is a security point scan needed? And I've also tried shooting turrets with lasers as shown in some vids, but doesn't destroy them at all. Do only dumbfire missiles work? Or lasers need to be of fixed type? Because gimballed don't work.. Would certainly like to just fly around and take everything out and have a free run in the srv, but doesn't seem to be working out for me...

The most tricky part is that you don't know settlement's security level while outside of the target system. Also, terminals and datapoints have two types of access - public and private. Scanning of public terminals/DAPs don't provoke any aggression, scanning of a private terminal/DAP will immediately results in aggression+bounty on your head (if this is not a lawless settlement). If you mean exactly datapoints then so far in all settlements bigger than tiny they are always in public access mode, but all or some of them can reside in restricted access areas in case of high-security settlements.
One important trick with scanning is that it doesn't require "direct visual", only distance counts (and the angle by which you can turn your srv's turret), so you can scan a datapoint trough a wall.
For tips where to find terminals and datapoints you can check "maps" part of this document (same as in my signature). Now I'm on the way of updating it to reflect changes arrived with ED:H 2.1.
Beware - this is a huge spoiler =)

Having a bit more luck with settlements now. Have gone to quite a few. Searching for security firmware patches. Someone else posted about these being in medium security settlements. And I've found that to be true. As well as other security types such as low security and the level of them (ie '+++') yielding the specific types of data according to those levels.

I've also been having fun trying to infiltrate them with greater efficiency. Some are certainly easier than others. I have not tried to attack and clear any base yet with my ship, as someone had stated that the turrets respawn fairly quickly. As well as some having security ships docked or orbiting the ststion( which the ships orbiting will soon jump out shortly after you arrive, but not already docked ships). So I've decided it was best to try and infiltrate stealth like with the srv at all times and have become quite good at it after some practice and srv skill honing.

Couple tips:
Use the camera!! In the srv, you seem to have a LOT more range with the canera, And can use it to your advantage to scan the surrounding area or over walls. I try to scope the area out as best as I can either in the center of a smallish base, or at a couple areas in the larger ones. Or get to a rooftop for an even better hawks eye view. Locate as many of the data points as you can and remember their location, while planning your run. Maybe even do a test run.

If any areas bring up the red no trespass zone (the red squared in areas that show up on radar) you will be attacked once the very short timer runs out whilst in that area. Try to save these data points for last. Or try to scan them through a wall as suggested earlier by another member(have not tested this) Or fight your way out. If you last long enough it will still save the data (as long as this was your last data point access and completed the cycle).
Also to do with the same trespass areas, if a data point is NOT on the ground but atop a building, you can (most times) access the rooftops and not be trespassing as long as you can get up there. Which leads to the second tip...

Any red barrier 'walls' or "force fields" (ones that are on ramps and require disabling to pass through) can be circumnavigated with a bit of skill in the srv, without having to worry about attacking the settlement and still be in 'stealth' mode. The trick with this is to Use your boosters to fly off and around the side of them. Use the camera first to make sure there isn't a ledge where you'll be landing. Then accelerate a small amount (just enough to let you float with minimal speed in the air and not overshoot), keep boosting until you reach your landing spot around the barrier, and land safely as you can. Even if you have to tumble your way in. Heh. Will only cost you a couple points of hull at most. Unless you go too fast and overshoot. Then you can access the entire rooftops with no trespassing!!

Along with exploring the rooftops, I also discovered that some data points are on rooftops that seem inaccessible. However some have little connecting bridges that can be driven on to reach it!

Another fun fact, is any wall that has a very steep grade to it, can still be driven up!! If you just drive up to it you will smack against it. So again with careful skill, very slowly gain a little bit of momentum, boost up just enough to tilt your srv backeards, and plant you wheels on that wall. Then full throttle and you climb that wall!! Also works going back down too.

Been finding these extremely fun. And although I've only received 3 security firmware patches (that I was on the hunt for for a measily level 2 mod and seemed to be the scarcest resource needed and now only have 3 attempts whereas I've got enough other materials for many more attempts minus the patches), I've gained many others which I'm sure I'll need at some point for other mods. As well as becoming a master at stealth infiltrations.

Hope this helps. I know I revived an old thread. But didn't see much out there regarding this.
