Engineers Any merit to this idea for upgrading?

I'm personally not that bothered by the current system but reading threads got me thinking about refinements.

In the current system you have a blueprint and in order to generate the results you use up materials some of which are difficult to find. The materials are lost whether you choose to apply the results or not which seems to be people's biggest issue - the loss of hard found materials. I totally understand FDEV thinking behind this.

But maybe there's a middle ground?

Perhaps generating the blueprint doesn't use the full amount of materials. Generating the blueprint costs say 50% of the materials which is lost as usual. If you are happy with the results you see then you apply the blueprint and the remaining 50% is taken and used up.

If the percentage idea doesn't work perhaps the generation might use the "common" materials first then the rare stuff to apply it if you want the upgrade.

Any merit?
