Any official word on whether FD are going to flesh out the Alliance?

Currently they have no ranks or ships or anything, and Mahon's benefits are laughable at best. (cheaper cargo racks? Really?) I also hear that his faction weapon is currently broken, and doesn't actually do any damage? Does anybody know if they have any plans to flesh out the Alliance? I keep noticing it in place #1 on the Powerplay leaderboard, despite there's nothing to get from the Alliance? Why do people fight for the Alliance without benfit? Is it morality? Their ideals? Nostalgia for the older games and what the Alliance did then?

Not a powerplay kinda guy here, but the Alliance is not the Fed's and not the Imp's it's that simple..

The Alliance had a series of community goals and multiple story arcs from March to the end of May such as an Alliance terraforming programme, Alliance colonisation programme, a project to revitalise the Lave region, and the Federation President’s visit to 78 Ursae Majoris. Then powerplay happened and the Alliance plots were abandoned.

Since that time it’s as if FD has decided to completely ignore the Alliance and the plots that were created. It’s possible that they’re recreating a new plot with the Alliance content they’re planning. However, the only answer we’ve been given is that content will come, no specific date or type of content has been given.

As a member of an Alliance supporting group myself (AEDC) since release in December 2014 I’d like to see more content for the Alliance. There are a lot of players who would like to see this too, whether it’s ships or simply a story presented through community goals or a series of Galnet articles giving more details about the structure of the Alliance itself.

We can push the Alliance through the use of the background sim and powerplay, both of which have been done very successfully by all involved. If you’re looking for actual non-player created content we’ll all have to simply wait and see, and hope!

Major Factions (imp, fed, alliance) and powerplay are not much related. The Alliance plays a pretty big role in Elite lore: when the Thargoids came, the imps and feds almost drove us to extinction due to their aggressive and violent behaviour. The Alliance was the only faction willing to use diplomacy, and they most likely saved all our butts. Beyond that the imps are narcistic slavers, and the Federation is basically Ayn Rand on steroids. There are some who like neither and appreciate the basic idea of the Alliance: to protect the basic freedom and independence of its members.

I think we'll see major Alliance Expansion when Thargoids become a larger part of the game. They'll act as the Human Beachhead for the assault on our worlds.

The wiki has this to say about Alliance ranks:
The Alliance does not contain ranks, instead featuring a complex permit scheme that restricts commanders' travel to Alliance systems.
Yet there is only one system with an Alliance permit - Alioth.
.
I'm not quite getting what FD means by "complex".

The Alliance's size and power has waned because when the Thargoids invade they're going to ally themselves with them. Having the Alliance too powerful before this happens would make the game ridiculously unbalanced. You heard it here first!!! :D

Boo alliance scum i have nothing others to say boooo i enjoy my buttlers :(

give them some ships too? Or have in any regard all factions interact more with one another be more interesting?

Pretty sure a wiki isn't officially FD's work...

There are no ranks but there is no alliance military, so far as I know. And I don't think there has to be, either.

However, alliance ships and some way to progress as an alliance sympathiser would be welcome. And I believe the former is something FD want but haven't yet planned.

Faulcon DeLacy is based in Alliance space, so it might, at the very least, be argued that ships like the Anaconda are Alliance-based by virtue of their origin.

Not done much background reading, but was slightly surprised that in the Powerplay menus the independents outnumber the Alliance massively - what exactly is the Alliance an alliance of? How does just one leader constitute an alliance? What am I missing?!

Ironically, it's the Alliance of Independent Systems. A coalition of independent factions coming together for mutual defense and cooperation to create a larger voice for those factions in the galaxy dominated mostly by the Federation and Empire.
