Just so
I was in a SW 1 hour ago, but am now proud owner of an Eagle. My stats say something about 15 hr and 69k earned so far.
I started trading at first, but the games bugs make it too easy to lose all your cargo/credits with a single bug, so I had to start over several times.
Then I read about combat in the conflict zones, found out after a while that (and how) you have to choose a side before you get any credits, found out after another while that Eranin is to be preferred, tried several setups key/mouse/joystick/gamepad in single player until I finally doubled the game price by buying a good joystick (Saitek X52), found out which conflict zones are best (hint: the ones with no other players in it) and then made more than 10k an hour as I got better at combat (still using fixed lasers only because of cost).
I read that the entry into a zone is based on peer-to-peer technology. There seems to be an "owner" of a particular area (station, conflict zone, ...) who gets the updates from the other players in the zone and broadcasts certain changes (like ship positions) back to them. So a lot depends on that players network connection. Worst case: That player has CTDed and the game takes a while to recognize it until it chooses another owner (that leads to disappearing stations and long hangs at entering a zone).
So, if you get into a conflict zone and it takes more than 2-3 seconds to drop out of frameshift, that's a bad sign already. You probably should fly straight to another zone.
Oh, and the first you should do once you find a good zone is quit to main menu. When you get in again, you are in the zone already (choose a side!) and have a good save point. Shooting 10 enemies for 5k, then CTDing can be quite frustrating, so shoot a few red guys, then quit to menu again. Avoid the enemy eagles unless they are engaged already, they can bring your shields down very quickly when you go head-to-head. Enemy cobras often use gatling guns which don't bring down your shields before you get into the turns and they are quite easy to follow. Don't go too close to the Anacondas. They take too long to take down, don't bring more credits and can get pretty nasty on you if you don't stay behind them.
Hope that helps a bit
