Newcomer / Intro Any reason to stay at Colonia?

I needed to take the plunge and get my 5k ly trip out of the way for the engineers, so I decided what the hell, I'll just take the Colonia highway (currently parked on a crappy planet, 3500 out - I'm going on holiday for a week tomorrow).

I'm just wondering if there's any reason to make Colonia my home when I get there (assuming I can transfer ships that far), or should I just kill myself (and how do I guarantee that I respawn back at Shinrarta Dezhra (I just hit Elite Trader rank, so I made that my home)?

Buy a Krait, unlock all the engineers, stay and do the sightseeing n stuff.
I left the Krait there, occasionally go back in a jumpy ship.

You can transfer ships if you can afford it.

As for self destruct - and someone please correct me if I'm wrong - you should respawn at your last docked point.

RE: respawning
If you die and choose to rebuy your ship, you will appear at the station where you last docked.
If you die and choose NOT to rebuy, you will lose your current ship and appear in a loaned Sidewinder at the station where you STARTED the game.

Just to clear confusions...

Unlock the 4 bubble engineers who are common knowledge: Elvira Martuuk, The Dweller, Todd 'The Blaster' McQuinn and Liz Ryder - get all of them to L4 (which incidentally would set your ship up reasonably well) then make the trip to Colonia - provided you have made Expert in combat all 4 Colonia engineers are available for the usual 'palm greasing' - together they can equip your ship in the same way as ALL of the bubble engineers. You then have a choice of progression so will need a nice place to stay...

How about an Asteroid base orbiting a Lava World?

Currently curated by the nicest bunch of anarchists you could meet - who have made Robardin Rock to only source of Federation Ships in Colonia! A warm welcome awaits you :)

If I chose not to buy, would I get the chance later to rebuy, or is that your one and only chance to claim on the insurance?

No, if you don't rebuy the ship on the rebuy screen it's gone forever.

That's why most people who want to "quick-travel" back to the bubble don't do it in a ship they spent hundreds of hours engineering etc.
You can buy a cheap ship and suicide in it, instead.

There's plenty of reasons to stay in the area if you're so inclined. However with a lot of what goes on being done between player groups, it's an area where you're best meeting up with people (see above post by @Wayland Pentonville). You've basically got pristine mining, unexplored systems 100 ly away and it's so much easier to engineer a ship than in the bubble. If CZs are your thing there's always a war going on somewhere too.

Open is a good place to be as well. It's not without trouble of course, but there's certainly no equivalent to Shin Dez or Deciat. Colonia and Ratraii do have their moments though, so you certainly could do worse than Carcosa as a home base with its ships and outfitting being as good as it is.

I've come to terms with staying at Colonia and purchased a Beluga Liner for VIP transport. So far have collected 60Mil credits in about 22 hours of game time. Still trying to A-grade some modules but yet to find them.

Actually nowadays if you choose to rebuy your ship it will put you into the nearest suitable station which is not necessarily the one you last docked at. Suitable means apart from having a shipyard and suitably sized landing pads that the controlling faction isn’t hostile towards you.

Each visit to the rebuy screen is a one shot opportunity however you will visit it each time your ship is destroyed, each time you don’t rebuy a ship it and it’s modules are gone forever.

Though if you can convince the support team you made a genuine mistake they might as a one time favour restore your lost ship, but probably not if you play too much between losing the ship and raising the support ticket.

If you are planning to move to Colonia make sure you have unlocked the bubble engineers needed to get you access to those in Colonia.

Got my credits back for my upgraded Beluga Liner. Now have collected over 155Mil.
