Newcomer / Intro Any reason to use open play as a trader/miner?

Hello I'm just starting out and from what I've gathered the difference between open and single play is just that people can PvP you is that right?

Is there any reason then as a person who is going to be using ships without guns on them to even bother playing in the open world or is there a benefit I'm missing?

At the moment it's difficult to even hold a conversation with another pilot, so there's very little reason to be in open play if you're a trader/miner.

FD have said they'll be improving the chat tools, when that happens I guess there'll be a social reason, but gameplay-wise still none.

Nope, your not missing anything, not really... but just because there is a chance of player interaction, don't assume its always going to end in pew pew. You might come across like minded individuals but also, you might never see another player.

I play in open and mostly feel like I am playing solo most of the time, its refreshing to see another player to be honest, sometimes even an exchange of greetings.

But I personally wouldn't mind if a player interdicted me to pirate me or whatever (or try) if it ever happens I think it just adds to the game. If you want to avoid this permanently, then play solo.. if you are open to these sorts of things, play open.

I went back to solo more due to reasons of not being able to dock at ports than the fear of being blown up. Suppose I was just more disappointed in finding out there was basically no reason for me to play in open and wanted to confirm it. I kind of feel there should be stuff we could only get as traders in open to make us go online as enticing bait for the pvpers.

Well, it comes down to personal preference, but the only real reason is this: risk. Players are probably going to be more aggressive and competent when pirating than NPCs, and they'll also be savvy to the popular trade routes in the busier parts of the galaxy. Personally I think that adds to the game significantly. While I don't trade much, and I've got lost explored to such an extent that I don't think any other player has EVER been in my little corner of space, I still think the chance of being attacked by another human, with the same skills and knowledge as me, makes the game seem far more dangerous and fun.

But yeah, I'd say the multiplayer interactions are by far the weakest part of this (amazing) game, so unless you find the added risk of open play fun, you might as well go solo.
