Hardware & Technical Any Recommendations for a good headphones/headset?

Greetings Commanders,

I'm almost done purchasing all my gear for ED. The only thing I'm really missing is a good headset to replace my surround sound system. I'm looking for something under 300$. A mic is a plus but not required since i have a pretty decent standalone mic. I've seen headsets and headphones that advertise 7.1 surround, does anyone have any experience with these? I can't imagine that having seven drivers in your headset would make a difference. I'm not interested in wireless. Maybe I'm just old school but i don't trust the sound quality and would prefer not to mess around with having to charge things. I also plan on hooking it up to a fairly nice Amp.

I haven't bought any accessories for a game in a very very long time but I'm going all out for this. So far I've purchased the following:

Oculus Rift DK2
EVGA 980 SC video card
Ch Products Pro Throttle
Ch Products Fighter stick
Ch Products Pedals
AuraSound AST-2B-4 Pro Bass Shaker Tactile Transducer - It's like a subwoofer that's strapped to my chair. It makes the whole thing vibrate and shake. my HOTAS is also connected to my chair, so these vibrate as well. I plan on getting a small Tactile Transducer for the pedals as well. I highly recommend this the unit is only about 50$ but you'll need an amp as well.

Are you sure this isn't just a showing off thread :D 300$ for a set of headphones, may as well just by a set of BOSE cans :)

I brought the Corsair Raptor HS40, they say they're 7.1 surround sound, but really? in a set of headphones? I'm not even sure how possible that is :p They cost me £35, they're USB, the mic on them is really good and the sound it also really good, almost as good as my BOSE, they're over ear cups as well so it's not uncomfortable if I'm wearing my glasses.

I am confused as to why you are wanting to hook your headphones up to an Amp, or do you have your soundcard outputting through that? If you do then I've not seen any mic/headphone sets with a 1/4" jack.

You got me Lol ;) part showing off, part trying to put things into context. Otherwise i would've just posted pics in the show us your setup thread.

I want to spend under 300. I'm already feeling kinda guilty about my other purchases :). I'm looking for something in the 200$ range but don't mind spending more if it really makes a difference.

My thought's exactly. Compared to the BOSE, can you actually tell if they're 7.1?

My soundcard (onboard audio) is hooked up to my sound system via an optical cable. The Bass Shaker is hooked up to the sound system. I can't get Audio to come out of the headphone jack and the optical at the same time becuase... well, reasons? (Trust me i've tried) So I have to go through my amp.

To be honest then, if you're not worried about having a mic on the headphones I really would opt for a decent set of normal headphones from either Bose or Sennheiser. I just imagine they would have given a bit more thought to the overall sound quality.

*edit* this is obviously jusy my personal preference, maybe someone else has some experience with a gaming set that are that much money.

... Or Budweiser made by Anhauser-Busch to Budweiser-Budvar...

you got me there ^^

however, on the audiofront i do support beyerdynamics (use their mics in the studio) and for ED i have a custom one pro for added funk :)

on a side note... BÖSE is ever so german *evil* mr bose being a bengali hindu doing MIT has no umlauts :p

What motherboard do you have? Do you have a soundcard?

I wouldnt personally buy a "headset" anymore. I own a 7.1 astro setup now which has served me well but i bought into the hype of multiple drivers, 7.1 etc etc, after extensive research i have learnt that the hype is purely psuedo and the best option is a decent set of headphones, a mic attachment and a surroundsound/dolby amp/DAC.

To give an example i swapped out my astro headset for a 20year old pair of technic headphones that my dad had laying around, plugged them into my astro dolby mixamp and they instantly sounded better minus a microphone. i was shocked after buying in to the "multiple driver" lol. The best thing that came out of buying that setup was the mixamp, it gives me a dolby solution, built in amp, wireless option without sacrificing quality.

I have narrowed my next setup down to AstroMixamp + Sennheiser HD558 + antilon Boom mic Pro. It gives me Dolby/AudiophileQuality/and Mic option.

I use the V moda M100, great for gaming and music, if you get the XL pads are extremely comfortable, and if you look it up on ebay is somewhat below your price range :)

Maybe a little late in this thread but the Sennheiser PC363D 7.1 Surround Gaming Headset has some excellent reviews on YouTube. Newegg also has them on sale until 30/11/2014.

View attachment 2203 I'm using a pair of these, very comfortable and great sound. If you use the razer sound program available free from their website they are fantastic, you can feel the cans move on your head! The razer software also gives you sudo surround sound that I found was better than my 5.1 headphones. BTW they (V-moda) are only $150 from their website at the moment. They do more expensive and cheaper versions also.
