Any special trick to using fixed cannons?

...especially in the Cobra? I can't even seem to hit stationary cargo containers. Is there an ideal range? What target indicators should I look for? I'm at a loss.

Apart from recommending setting the sights to trailing rather than leading, though that shouldn't really make any difference with a static target, I'm not sure. Are you using cannons or multi-cannons?

If it's specifically about the Cobra, it sounds like you've fitted cannons to the C2 slots. This isn't a great idea as they are spaced quite wide and I don't think you get any convergence with cannon. They work quite well in the C4 slots.

Do you only have cannon fitted to your Cobra or do you have some other weapons fitted?

I have 2 Class 4 fixed cannon (not multi) on the C4 hardpoints (the ones that are closest together) as primaries in the first firegroup so I can't figure out what the problem is. I also have two gimbaled C1 or C2 multicannon on the C2 hardpoints (secondary fire, first firegroup). Am I supposed to get the two little pips that don't bounce around (presumably the fixed cannon) on the target? I guess I should try to go practice on a navbeacon from different ranges until I figure it out.

Your primary/secondary setup appears to be a little odd - I use gimballed C1 burst lasers in the first firegroup as primary to easily laser the enemies shields away without aiming all that accurate and then pull the trigger fully to activate the secondary c4 cannons to deliver the Coup de grâce.

Sight set to trailing and firing when the crosshair is right atop the enemy (but leading works just as well - comes down to personal preference).

When I used the c4 cannons on the cobra I had the targeting as leading and the cannon and lasers on separate fire groups, having them separate stops the jumbled reticule from both groups happening. We do need to be able to set our own preference for convergence for the cannons I think as I often hit with one and missed with the other.

First thing I'd suggest is don't have the gimbols up at the same time as the cannons, they are distracting and it's hard enough to see the little leading crosshair anyway as it's quite small and faint.

The other thing is they are a slow velocity weapon and, if the target is rolling and moving, very hard to hit with until your up close, so be patient wait until target is making a steady move like an even turn or flying straight. They are particularly good at taking out the big ships quickly, small ships can evade but you only need to hit them a couple of times for a kill.

Just be patient and make sure you focus on that crosshair for small ships.

I'm not clear on what you mean by "pull the trigger fully" there. Is that just a metaphor for "let him have it" or does the trigger on your joystick or whatever have an analog continuous function like that? Also, you imply that lasers are better against shields. Is that right?

The end with the hole in it points towards the bad guy.

Oh, and practice, practice, practice. when you can swat fed fighters out of the sky, you have learned the skill of cannon fire.

No one is born with the skill. Dont care what part of Appalachia they hail from ;)

He was talking about a dual stage trigger, like on a Saitek X52. There are two actual triggers in those, half pull is trigger1, all the way is trigger2. He had them set up for weapon group 1 and 2.

Yeah - I'm using a TM Warthog and the index finger fire button has primary (pulled but not all the way through) and secondary actions (pulled all the way through mapped to all guns firing) assigned to it.

As JamesBondage pointed out already, lasers are better vs shields, so I just laser the enemies shields down by slightly pulling the trigger and when I get a clear shot, I just pull it through.

Ah, thanks, "Catpain" Kirk. So I followed people's advice to separate the C4 fixed cannon from the C2 multicannon and put them in different fire groups. That does seem to help. Finally managed to hit a stationary container in space with the C4 cannon that way. Now to do that with a moving target. :D
