Newcomer / Intro Any tips for travelling with friends?

So far I've enjoyed my Elite experience from gamma on my own doing the odd mission \ learing how not to trade and smuggle stolen goods etc. I'm still learning, but with the host of YouTube and forum posts I'm getting along and enjoying the game. However, part of the Wow! factor was the trailer way back with "I bring friends!". This transformed the concept of Elite from my 1984 days. Here I can team up and survive and travel with friends.

Before you say it, I've read the thread on "Wings". Sounds great, but it's not here yet.

So here I am, with my friend, luckily both near each other in the vast galaxy and were struggling.
We have Teamspeak, so at least we can talk, but the evening went something like this.

"Hi. Where are you?"
"I'm in the space station. You?"
"Just outside. I'll wait for you"
"OK. I'm out. Can you see me?"
"No. Where are you?"
"I'm outside. Where are you?"
etc.....
We eventually found each other and picked a route to a 'High Tech' system to buy upgrades a good 29LY away and ventured off.
At one point I was interdicted. My screen froze, that was bad timing as I normally escape these, and a NPC in a Viper started to pummel me.
My friend was then "How do I find you? I'll come and help."
My answer I can't type here as I frantically struggled with my basic sidewinder and warning signs and every alarm bell blaring at me. But, I was fortunate to escape in the end (Again thanks to the YouTube clips I've watched).

So we both ended at our destination. Docked and started purchasing upgrades for our sidewinders. Chatting about this and that in the station.
Then we picked a new route and started again. This time we failed completely to find each other just outside the station for ages. :( Frustrating. We gave up and both docked and saved for the night.

So a rather un-educated conclusion was to update our sensors as the default sensors only have a 4km range. No idea if the 5km range will assist in the future? And that was 1 hour of play. Considerably longer to get anywhere than just going alone and pretty frustrating when out and about.

So what I need help with are any tips on playing this as multiplayer in its current form?
We have Teamspeak, it's about being there to help each other out and travel together.
Do you both supercruise at the same time? Can you assist in an interdiction? Do we need better sensors? Are we just being blind and not spotting each other? Any help would be appreciated.

FDev have confirmed that Wingmen will be a feature that is coming in 2015.

There is a lot that is still yet to be put in the game. If the feature is not in there yet, it's usually because it is not up to scratch yet.

I understand that. I was just wondering, in the mean time, if any others have any tips on making this work with what we currently have available.

Hello,

My friend and I played yesterday with some success. I believe that each time you enter/leave supercruise you change instance so since you both logged in at the station, you probably started in different instances & so couldn't see each other.

In our case, we set a destination from the station & travelled there separately but when I dropped back to sub-light speeds, I found that I had been put in the same instance as my friend & found him there waiting.

We then kept appearing in the same instances for the rest of our 3-ish hours of playing which was much better than I expected, given that the multiplayer feature hasn't been properly implemented yet.

We never found a way to join the fight when one of us was interdicted, but I'm going to invest in a FSD wake scanning thingy to see if that works. My plan is to find the wake left when my friend submits to the interdiction and try to follow it into the same instance.

I have no idea if this plan will work, but I'll post back here if I have any success.

P.S.
Any more experienced players know if the above assumptions are correct?

There is a friends tab in the start screen after you load up the game. I'm not certain, but that might help with the matchup so that you end up on the same instance.

The other think is low-energy FSD wakes. You can target these and pop out into normal space where someone dropped out of supercruise. So if you get interdicted and drop out, it leaves a wake behind in SC. Your friend just needs to target that FSD wake and pop out of SC in the same way you target a station... Hope that helps.

The low-energy FSD wake does not need a wake scanner...

Grioups may help

Hi there!

Cant comment on coming to the rescue of you friend when they are interdicted. But my brother and I set up a group in the main menu and this allowed in game comms between us (very atmospheric crackly with NASA style random beeps) as well as local radar showing each other in green when we were out and about.

As we started about 1 hop apart initially I could direct him to the right space port and then "target" him via left hand screen when he arrived, allowing me to get up close and personal. This was basically us floating inverted to eachother using the horizontal and vertical thrust keys to crab about in space - which was very funny!

Spent about 30 mins just hanging in space reminiscing about playing Elite on the Acorn Electron and BBC B back in the early 80's and practisicing flight controls.

Hope using groups may help keep tabs on your friend, it also opens up an alternative play option of playing in thsi group rather than solo or with unwashed masses, i assume this means you and friends plus NPC's no other ganking players.

Trust this helps?

I love this game!!!
