Any truckers out there? Gaming rig for your rig?

I've been driving night-shift for a local company the last 8 years and I'm completely burned out. I'm set on going to drive for Prime and living out of their truck but the only thing stopping me is my gaming addiction. Are there any truckers or other smart people that can help me figure out a gaming setup for a truck? Thanks.

I would have thought any decent laptop would do. I spent part of the summer living out of hotels due to work, just loaded the Beta on the laptop and flew using the Keyboard

A laptop would be my last choice but likely the most sensible. Ideally I'd want a gaming desktop but I'm worried about vibrations/bumps knocking something loose on the motherboard. I figure electronics get transported by truck so there may be a solution. Thanks for the response.

Whatever you choose, grab an xbox joypad. Flying is much easier using one than using a mouse/keyboard and is very portable/easily stored.

You can always connect an external monitor, keyboard and a joystick to the laptop. When PCs are shipped as a whole they are (hopefully ;) ) stuffed with packing materials so things cannot wiggle too much.

The only big problem with bumps and knocks is if the machine is on and writing data. computers are getting driven/flown around the world all the time. Imagine a cargo freighter doing a heavy landing in a crosswind with 100T on computers onboard, it's happening somewhere as I type.

Just make sure when it's powered down you have a secure padded area to store it while you're driving. Personally I'd stick with a powerful laptop, a lot more money tho.

there are a few really small form factor builds flyin around, mainly designed for folks to cart around for lan parties etc, but im sure you could make something work in your rig, maybe run VR or brief case a monitor, roccat has http://www.ownthecouch.gg/site.php in development with gaming quality kb and mouse, could probably rig something up yourself if your handy with diy. plenty of options i reckon dude.. ofc as Driver says a laptop could do the job.. but i sense you want something more :)

*you'd only need a mini keyboard if you went with the suggestion of the 360 controller.. way less hassle lol

Although the cost would be higher as much storage on SSD would alleviate the 'bumps and bruises' concern. Install the OS to a large drive, install games onto separate thumb drives...boom.

With SSDs that isn't even an issue, but i would not want my quite heavy GPU wiggle aorund in the case, the way it bends just a wee bit when i put my rig upright makes me cringe. A laptop might have other uses while on the road, just maybe not watch movies while driving ;)

Certainly, OB trucks often have stuff running on general purpose computers these days- they just tend to build them into sturdy rackmount chassis, and make sure it's all physically assembled properly.

Maybe if you could mount a small 4u or 6u rack in the sleeper, and stand a usably-sized LCD on top of it when it's running (and packed in a suitable Peli case or something when it wasn't), you'd probably be ok. A laptop would still be easier, of course, but you will be paying for the convenience.

The biggest physical danger is if you have a large CPU cooler- especially on a PC that is upright in a tower stylee. The forces on the heatsink, which is already screwed down to the CPU core firmly, can cause it to crush the CPU core, which isn't ideal. So if you do go with a "normal" PC, try to keep the motherboard horizontal.

Have you considered a small form factor machine, like a Micro ATX one? There are some really good gaming-centric Micro ATX motherboards around now, which can take full sized GPUs and proper desktop CPUs. If you just wanted a "normal" PC, a small form factor box, that would give you pretty high performance gaming in a smaller box.

Not running it while you're moving is a big thing too- even if you're using spinning rusty glass hard drives instead of SSD, a powered down and parked hard drive can take a lot more Gs than you can before it dies :)

Thanks everyone. Last time I checked, 4 years ago, "gaming laptop" was a silly combination of words. It looks like they've come a long way.

Don't forget that with an oculus rift and HOTAS, screen size wouldn't matter

I saw a device that shows your surroundings using lasers so I could totally play ED while driving.

Ancipital beat me to it. We used to rack mount computers for travelling shows.

This is perfect.

I use an alienware m17 for mobile gaming, ED runs great on it. I play it with a wireless 360 controller, can sit and watch TV or be with the family and play at the same time. Reckon it would be fine for your truck. Even runs Far Cry 4 at a reasonable lick as well. Mines is a few years old now but the newer ones would fly along.
