Any use for higher than D rated sensors?

Hi All,

I have been wondering about this for quite some time. Does anyone actually upgrade their ship's sensors to anything beyond the weight reduction offered by the D rated version? It seems to me that anything higher than D rated is just a waste of money, power and excessive weight for the advantage they offer. I could be wrong though, but I would like to hear/read how others feel about this.

- Do you ever purchase higher than D rated sensors, if you do why?
- Should Frontier make the higher rated sensors more useful?

They offer nothing really worthy. Hopefully FD will expand electronic warfare more in the future and make them worth it.

I quite like having them on some of my more fragile ships as it means I can 'see' a CMDR usually before he sees me and it allows a few precious seconds to decide if he's pvp fitted and looking for bother or a innocent trader and take action accordingly. As for weight concerns you can engineer the A rated to be as light as a D, but the power drain is still generally too much for power-hungry ships/builds (pvp mainly ).

A rated provides a large range advantage. This is useful in a number of scenarios which require situational awareness (both defensive and offensive). B rated provides the most protection for the module itself so it is less likely to take catastrophic damage during combat. Unless weight is an extreme issue, I always go A rated.

If u run PvP, yes.

In PvE, less so. Higher Rated Sensors have a better 'resolution', meaning they can pick up smaller heat signatures on longer ranges. I once had afight with a NPC-DBX that disapeared from my scanners all the time at 3km or so that was proably running a realtivly cold build. Since i upgraded to A-Rated Sensors on my Combat Ships this hasnt happened anymore.

A-Rated Sensors are 'nice to have' if u do RES Hunting and Combat Zones on dedicated Combat Ships. But they are nothing that i would pack on my Mission Boat, Trader or Explorer.

They're pretty useful in fighters, which almost always don't have the necessary power to be able to equip them.

In a heavily engineered Corvette for PvE, it does not matter at all. If it flies into view it dies. If it flies out of range I just wait. A rated has great range, but the power requirements are not worth it, and I don't really hang around to take module damage so B is not worth it either.

As you say, pve, but even then they are useful if you use a warrant scanner. I only play in open so that A rate has saved me a few times and I have a constant eye on the scanners.

On some ships, like the FDL, the weight increase from D to A is not that much and I would run the A rated sensors to have better radar coverage in a Haz Res. On large ships I only run D rated.

Ok, thanks for the information and advise. I will try to fit A rated sensors on my combat ships to see whether it is worth it. However, I still think that Frontier should improve them. Maybe better rated sensors should have a bigger scanning arc?

No you haven't , my error was thinking of the new life support mod and maybe a bit of whisky in the mix...

You can have light weight scanners(KWS etc. ) but not sensors

That's a good thing. I was always thinking to myself 'If only I could shave some some weight of my 1.3 T KWS, it would really help in this 1500 T ship'.

i have A-rated sensors on all my small combat vessels and on my small smuggling/mission running ships (courier, DBS/ cobra, Adder).

and A-rated sensors on my combat FDL.

in a RES/CZ, the additional 1,8 km range does help for situational awareness - and a d-class 2 sensor (courier, dbs) has 4,68 km range only. in my speed courier i want to see more than 8 seconds afront.

for smuggling to surface ports or military outposts, being able to check system securities movements out of their scanner range is usefull.

i never A-rate them on my python or conda - their 5,4/5,7 km range of d-class sensors is more then enough for all game situations.

Combat: A. Unless the power and mass penalties are too high (Vulture).
Everything else: D. Max cost effectiveness. Least mass for speed and jump.

At one point A rated sensors were meant to help turrets / gimbals track the target, not sure if that is the case now. That said having 8km sensor range is nice!

Course, you can get a lightweight mod in 2.2, so fitting A rated might be more manageable for mass purposes. Not sure how much damage they really take in combat.
