Any way to increase exploration rank....illegally?

If there was a way to be data pirate, this might work. Where, somehow you sneak up on an explorer and drop a hacking limpet on their ship and drain out the data.

Luckily, at least from my perspective, there is no way to do that.

It's an interesting sort of way to RP, though. You might just have to increase the rank the legal way in order to facilitate your illegal doings.

At best it would be a copy of the data, and the explorer would still be able to sell theirs, only the data pirate might have turned its copy earlier, therefore scoring any potential first discoveries. Everything else would be Hollywood computer science, where data sets themselves are treated as if they were physical object and therefore act like data theft would automatically result in the original vanishing. (A good story involving data theft typically revolves around a data set that must not fall into the wrong hands, and not about getting back that data someone stole from you in order to use it; in other words, the proper goal is usually destruction of the stolen copy, not retrieval.)

Scan FSD Wakes, follow the explorers, kill them and then sell the data they would have had... Close enough.

again with 400,000,000,000 stars killing some explorer for the 0.0000000001% they just took is not illegal (its an anarchy system) its just a colossally jerk-ish thing to do.

Good idea for a new limpet though, a data mining limpet.. attaches to enemy ship and if successful it leeches 30% of whatever exploration data they have and adds it to your databanks :) Would impose a limit in that if the ship the data is leeched from is destroyed within 1 hour of the limpet attack, the data dies as a copy too. this would prevent the user of the limpet from stealing 30% data then killing the explorer

Do the 'find lost stuff' missions that sometimes require a particular exploration rank contribute to exploration pilot ranking?

Wait till they implement boarding, then do exploring in a stolen ship. Should be illegal enough for your needs :)
