Any way to separate EDH and EDO?

Howdy gang. I bought E:D solely for VR flight sim around jagged planets that hate me and want to destroy me. By all accounts, having seen the Odyssey planets, my expectation is that FDev is moving towards FPS-first. It makes sense to have largely flat meatball planets when the goal is to provide a space for people to run around in rather than fly around in.

The ideal for me would be that they change course and "fix" the planetary tech so that it can make extreme monstrosities like Achelous 8 A again, but I don't think that's likely given that it goes against the FPS model (could you imagine trying to walk around that mess?!).

My secondary ideal is to legacy Horizons. Leave it as it and stop support for it; updates go to EDO. This is what Jagex did with Runescape back when I was a wee pube, and it worked like a charm.

So that's where my question is; given the unlikelihood of Elite continuing to exist for my little minority niche playstyle group, anyone figure out a way to take Horizons offline and run a home server with some mates? Or anything similar? I'd put a bounty out for that, swear down.

You'd need your own Stellar Forge IIRC. Even solo mode heavily depends on the servers.

Balls. xD

Hey, I got nothing against what people like to play. There's lots of games I enjoy that others don't, and plenty that I don't that others do. I don't think Odyssey planets will have a place for me. I got a couple hundred hours of play at least, and I'm sure there'll be another Newtonian flight sim to fill the market gap eventually!

brb just hacking FDev and stealing Stellar Forge info

I thought the stellar forge part was run locally. I agree with OP though. A legacy cut of Horizons as it is now would be great.
Like, I would happily take a zero exploration cut. No newly generated planets; no more brave new worlds to unearth. Just the current Horizon Bubble would work for my playstyle; i.e. taking small ships to steep, tight canyons and failing to pilot successfully. :D

The problem as I see it is that a couple of years ago ED took a hard right turn from being a mostly accurate space sim to being the theatre for an FPS game. Basically, they dropped the exploration side of the game to all intents and purposes, despite the success of DW2 (which I also completed).

I'd like to see more exploration content obviously, not just zoological but also new races and sites to investigate and explore. If this developed into a group of half a dozen races all with different politics and interactions with the human race that too would be ok. It would add a nice dimension to the game...

But EDO clearly says that ED is going to be a pew pew platform and everything else is secondary to that objective. If you love ED for pew pew 👍 great! Your in luck! If you are like me and are not into the pew pew... Your screwed. This game is on an entirely different track now! DW3 is indefinitely postponed and by the time this has all shaken down, I doubt we will see another DW community event 🥺😪

Will ED split into two versions for the two primary groups (PvP vs PvE) and go their separate ways? No, I just can't see that being economically worth the pain to FD. As I see it at the moment. Exploration in ED is dead.

Totally dead.

You can achieve what you want just by not buying Odyssey.

I don't think that will happen honestly. As much as I can see the pros of this idea.

This would further fracture the player base, which is (for a MMO of this scale and being so niche) for the moment until tech gets merged and console is released bad enough as it is.

Ooh, you should have been around for the initial Elite: Dangerous release. Up until 2 days before release FD had commited to an off-line mode, which they abandoned in a single sentence in a newsletter... Now THOSE were the days... :)

As I understand it, the Odyssey planetary tech will be merged into Horizons regardless of whether or not I buy Odyssey. Given that is the sole cause of my issue, I don't think not buying will solve it.

I'd be delighted if they rolled back on that merger idea, though!
Yes that's the plan. But actually I don't see it as a bad thing. Atm the planet gen is apparently buggy but can already produce great views, even for Horizons only gameplay.
And as a positive take on it: Yes your beloved findings may be different with the new tech, but then now there are new things on new planets for you to find.

The question is: Can they fix the bugs, bring the performance up to par and does it the new planet tech live up to it's expectations?

ED:H will be different then, no question, but if that is good or bad I can't guess at this point .

It's on me for not being more explicit about what my playstyle is. I'm not an explorer (although I do echo their concerns, it doesn't affect me personally - that's no excuse to be silent on legitimate issues affecting others, of course!), I'm a racer/joyrider/hooner. The flat landscapes I see in the screenshot threads are a genuine disappointment to me; just a pretty canvas with nothing to do in it.

I'd wire $100* to anyone who can find me a planet to play like this or this in EDO. For sure, it's ugly as sin compared to the pretty visuals in Odyssey, but mightily fun!

*$100 CAD, mind, so it's not actually worth much xD

There are so many styles :)

Looking for such canyons myself still and that's one of the things why I can't make final predictions of the outcome of the merger.
I'm not a racer, but speeding with the ship through long jagged canyons is always a welcome change :D

OT: Are these what my fellow Americans YouTubers like to call "monopoly dollars"?

I hear you, mate. Almost a certainty now that the changes to EDH with the O tech kill the playstyle. Its a shame. But it was fun whilst it lasted 👍

Bahaha I stayed silent through all the other "controversial" updates. It's this that finally brought me to the forums.

Perhaps it's a shame on me for not voicing concerns earlier, and only piping up when things actually affected me. 🤷
Don't worry about it. Concerns were raised in advance but largely drowned in many replies telling us not to worry. Such is life
