Any word on CQC?

Just like to know if there's been any word on the cqc update as I've head nothing I keep seeing people say it's coming soon but how soon is soon?

This is purely a guess but I dont think we will see it till that little show next month. They will show it in a press show then say boom and its playable now. This is just my guess so I hope Im wrong would be cool to see it next week :p

If we go by what has been said in previous dev diaries, CQC is not what is being unveiled at Gamescom. CQC is slated to release by the end of July and be playable before Gamescom. Now, if they miss the July release window, then I have no idea what they will do.

I got the feeling after reading the Lead Project Manager Q&A that they were making us wait until August 5th now! The kickoff to Gamescon.

Don't get me started on how much I disagree with the idea of tying build updates to trade show schedules! :( Its bad enough that this has become so prevalent with DLCs and other title updates, but when the practice starts creeping in to actual BETA BUILD UPDATES!!! That REALLY ticks me off, BIG TIME!!

Especially when we have a build like this one, that should have been patched with at least one maintenance update weeks ago! :(

FD did say they had an announcement of a major gameplay feature to be made available. Something they have been working on a long time to get ready. Probably will be CQC. What I don't understand is why they are introducing it at all. Surely their efforts would better serve sorting out all the issues the current build has, before introducing a major gameplay feature that has the potential to throw yet more problems into the mix. They did say this was why there hadn't been any recent updates as they were holding the update off to release alongside the new feature.

God knows we have waited long enough....at this rate ED will never be finished for retail release....at least niot before the players lose interest. Don't get me wrong, I love ED and have b backed it Rom kickstarter on the PC but we are still a ways off retail release surely? Why introduce new features to an incomplete, buggy build? That's like building a modern skyscraper on old shakey foundations. No matter how many features the building has it will still topple over the same when the basement gives way.

They also said it would be a new announcement not CQC, and not exclusive to Xbox.

I know...I was just hoping that they meant a new CQC announcement for gamescon....or just how many things are FD trying to juggle ? Each 'thing' or announcement just means their attention and manpower is getting more and more divided...
CQC is not an xbox exclusive as they have already said it is coming to PC and MAC users too. Just being released first in xbox version.

The other concern I have based on watching other developers totally trip over themselves when they release some HUGE update that proves in the wild to be significantly MESSED UP is exactly that!

Considering that we already have a build here for the XB1 that has enough separate bugs and stability issues to fill the yellow pages of a small town, does anyone honestly think that when the next update is finally released with all this extra stuff glommed onto it, that it is going to run perfectly? I truly shudder to think what level of complete disaster might be awaiting us on August 5th!

And the other LOVELY THING about developers releasing major updates during a trade show, is that more often than not, the lead developers are often far away from their development systems and physically present AT the same trade show! So when the you know what hits the fan, they are in no position to effectively do anything about it in anything resembling a timely fashion!

August 5th is a Wednesday. That gives us just two short days between the probable update and a weekend. And based on the worrying fact that FD seems to literally take weekends OFF, creating two full days of complete radio silence between the player community and even 1st Tier Tech support, well... You don't have to be a video game support expert to see that all of this collectively is a disaster waiting to happen!

I just hope to god that I am wrong about how this is all going to play out when the day comes!

Truly....

I have been very lucky and had only one crash to desktop when I swapped ships once and one connection issue that lost me my ship. Other than that things have been pretty smooth. But I realise I am in the minority on this. I just think FD should concentrate on the core game and getting it more stable before adding to it. Are they trying to make life more difficult for themselves? ( and us ).

But from rumblings of discontent in the PC forums where kickstarter players are starting to give up because there are problems on their build that still haven't been sorted after a year...well it makes me wonder if David Braben , God love him , hasn't somehow gotten carried away on the ED steam train he has created. But what happens when that momentum starts to slow down, as it appears to be doing on the PC?

I just really don't want to see a wonderful idea and fantastic game end up being abandoned before ever getting finished as a result of the cost of fixing and developing couldn't be supported be the limited but very loyal playerbase. It won't be the first time a big developer has had to do this. Double Fine released a very playable but ultimately unfinished beta as a 'finished retail' release and abandoned any further development on their Spacebase DF 9 game. That was a kickstarter game too. But it got caught in a catch 22 scenario where it's playerbase, who had funded the game initially, couldn't support the cost of further development and bug fixing, and the developers couldn't bring in more buying players and the much needed cash until the game had been developed more as after the initial fan base had invested, the rest of the gaming community adopted a cautious wait and see how it goes attitude. Literally the game ended up costing a lot more to fix and develope than it had ever made in the kickstarter. Double fine were taking large losses on it when they had to finally abandon it, despite a very loyal playerbase. Plus they didn't have the costs that involve maintaining an online game as FD do for Elite. I am really worried about this as we are starting to see this happen in the PC version. Original founders on the kickstarter are starting to give up on the game as they see too little progress has been made on problems they have been having. They think the 'rough diamond' that is Elite Dangerous shouldn't be so rough after a year.

CQC will be out next week because it's their last opportunity to hit that "July" window they set for themselves at E3. Also they'll want it out before they head out to Gamescom so that they can be telling people it's "available to play now" in any interviews whilst there.

I personally think they'll be targeting Wednesday and not just for CQC going live but also the trunk update they've been promising for PC/Mac because Windows 10 goes live on July 29th and I have a funny feeling Frontier have been working on updating the Cobra Engine for DX12 for some time now. If my theory is correct then it makes perfect sense to hold off until Windows 10 goes live. ;)

Front line developers don't typically go to the trade shows, they stay at home doing the real work. It's usually David Braben, Ed Lewis (Community Manager) & Michael Gapper (PR and Communications Manager) and the occasional producer who go to them. They are backed up by volunteer ambassadors from the community who help demo the games to the public.

There's nothing to stop them making updates during trade shows if they are necessary.
