Anybody picking up the new Xbox Elite controller for ED?

I use a 360 controller right now and I like it, but it has shortcomings when it comes to ED. The worst thing about it for me, is that you lose lateral thrusters. With the four new triggers on the Elite, that'll solve that problem and add two buttons as well. Being able to swap in longer sticks will be great too. It'll give that extra bit of control, for FA off maneuvers and sniping. I also like being able to switch button mappings on the fly.

It is pricy at $150, but before I saw it, I was considering getting a HOTAS in preparation for the Rift or Vive. Now I can just get an Elite since it has everything I needed out of a hotas. Plus I prefer a small controller, as I don't have a tabletop in front of me, and I'm probably more accurate with the controller just due to experience.

The best thing though, is that I can use it for any other game that uses controllers. All in all, if you want the real feeling, nothing short of a good HOTAS would suffice. If you're someone who has a lot of games and doesn't mind playing ED with a controller though, it could be worth picking up.

Is anyone thinking of getting one for ED or otherwise?

All of the videos I've seen have said it feels nice and is durable. If you use a controller a lot, it'd be good to have.

Not for $150 friend! I still have my original XBOX 360 controller that is almost 10 years old! And that sucker came with the 360!!! I also have an OLD SideWinder Precision Pro that's over 20 years old and still works a treat!

You lose your thrusters with the XBox controller? I don't... then again I've had mine custom mapped since Beta 1 but apart from swapping weapon loadouts, engaging FSD, and of course text chatting, everything else is mapped on my 360 controller perfectly. In fact, my original 360 controller broke so I searched high and low all around for a new one. Suffice to say, they're pretty rare!

They are rare? I have 3 brand new ones, original! 2 BNIB

Well sure, if you don't want it, you don't have to buy it. If you're in a situation like me though, it's completely worth it's price, plus it's still cheaper than a good HOTAS. As I said, I use my original 360 controller too, but no matter the condition, it handicaps you in ED.

The lateral thrusters are the only ones that aren't mapped by default, as there aren't enough axises to support it. Sure you can bind them to other buttons, but you'll lose a bunch of potential mappings, if you bind the thrusters to a button that can use the directional pad input as well.

In my area they are. I suppose I can get them off e-bay or what not. I suppose I should've phrased it different: Wired X-Box 360 controllers are much more uncommon then Wireless X-Box 360 controllers.

Ahh - now I know why. Because I have roll mapped to left and right bumper. Yaw and pitch are left thumbstick and thrusters are right thumbstick. Ever since I was a kid I learned how to crab hold the controller so my middle fingers are on the triggers and my index are on the bumpers.

I fly rc planes and helis so a game pad feels more natural to me but the current game pads suck for ED. Pretty sure i will pick one up.

I wouldn't pay what they're charging for it. Aren't console players more price conscious than PC gamers and that's one of the reasons they plumped for a console in the first place? I doubt they will sell a ton of them.

What will be interesting is how many of those developments eventually filter down into the standard controller? Those pad things underneath would be useful.
