Hardware & Technical Anybody using the Razer Tartarus for ED?

Hi all,

I'm going to jump into ED for the first time tonight, and I'm currently watching tutorial videos and working on getting everything set up before I do. I won't be able to get a flight stick setup for another month or so, so I'll be using a basic mouse, the Razor Tartarus, and Voice Attack to begin with. I was wondering if anyone else was using the Tartarus, and if so, would you mind sharing how you have it set up for ED?

Thanks,
Dorian

I have a gamepad with analogs, d-pad, basic buttons, etc. It was given to me, and I've yet to use it, but now I'm thinking until I get a flight stick, I should just use the gamepad for basic flying and use Voice Attack for as many other controls as I can. Anyone tried this? Does it sound viable?

I was using one with a Saitek Cyborg X aka Fly 5 that I had for several years until a couple buttons broke off the Saitek. I used my mouse for head look at the time, I have since upgraded to a Saitek X-55 and no longer use the Tartarus in Elite (I use it elsewhere though). It worked quite well for me though. I find I am a little slower navigating the Menus on my X-55 but faster in dog fighting. I'm sure this will improve as I get used to the new controls more. My joystick had two throttles on it so that helped a lot when combined with the Tartarus. I suppose if you only have a mouse you could use the scroll wheel for throttle? Here is the configuration I used for my Tartarus...

01 = 1 (Left Panel)
02 = 4 (Right Panel)
03 = W (UI Panel Up)
04 = 3 (Sensor Panel)
05 = 2 (Comms)
06 = Q (Prev UI Tab)
07 = A (UI Panel Left)
08 = S (UI Panel Down)
09 = D (UI Panel Right)
10 = E (Next UI Tab)
11 = HOME (Cargo Scoop)
12 = PAGE DOWN (Sensors Zoom Out)
13 = MOUSE MIDDLE CLICK (Recenter Camera)
14 = PAGE UP (Sensors Zoom In)
15 = E (Landing Gear)

HAT UP = UP ARROW (Power To Engine)
HAT LF = LEFT ARROW (Power To Systems)
HAT RT = RIGHT ARROW (Power To Weapons)
HAT DN = DOWN ARROW (Balanced Power)

SMALL BUTTON = LEFT SHIFT (UI Focus)
BIG BUTTON = SPACE (UI Select)

I only needed one Keymap for my setup, though of course you could add more. I tried to program my Tartarus so that it used the default keys for Elite whenever possible so as little remapping was required as I could manage. On my Joystick I had Deploy Weapons, Next Target, Next Firegroup, Chaf, Heat Sink, Silent Running , Shield Boost, Thrusters, Afterburners, Hyperdrive, and Primary and Seconday Fire mapped. So you will want to remap those to your Tartarus via a second keymap probably unless you have a Razer Naga or something to go with that Tartarus.

Awesome, thanks so much. And I do have a scroll wheel for throttle. I'm going to give your setup a try and also test out using Voice Attack.

Thanks again!

Yah you'll probably want to at least put stuff you need fast like Afterburners and maybe Chaff and Shield cell on the Tartarus. In your case I would probably dump the WASD & QE from my keymap in favor of making those Boost, Chaff, Heatsink, Hyperspace and etc and maybe make a second keymap for controlling the UI panels. If you have a Razer mouse with Synapse you could put the keymap cycle hotkey on the mouse rather than on the Tartarus so you can still use your whole hand on the Tartarus. That is assuming you prefer the while pressed method for cycling keymaps as I do...
