Anyone else feel sick with DK2

Was lucky enough to get a DK2 today. Found it easy enough to setup and get working (followed the instructions on the forum)

The Positives: WOW !! there is no doubt the immersion is phenomenal, better actually than I expected. It really struck me when I was docking in Aulin, you get to sense the massive size of the station with my tiny wee ship squeezing through the entrance, truly brilliant. Banking and rolling the ship also feels differnent to the desktop experience. You actually fell much more connected to the ship. Flying it felt completely natural.

I also found myself just sitting staring out the window at the scenery, because it looked so darn good.

I was flying the Hauler, it is great looking around the cockpit. You can even look behind the seat at the back of the cabin and the door.

The Negatives : It makes me feel so sick I don't think I am every going to be able to use it for any length of time. Almost crashed when landing because I thought I going to vomit. It might just be me, I'm very sensitive with 3D TV's and those video theme park rides you get in Disney.

Anyone else found this??

The pixelation is worse than i thought causing a loss of detail. The text is easy enough to read and the menu's float beautifully in the air. Suppose I am just comparing it to my 2560x1600.

The Weird: Looking at the animated arms in the cockpit. They look and actually "feel" like they are my arms, but it is very odd that they don't move when I move my fingers for instance.

I wasnt really interested in this, thought it was a bit novelty and kind of nerdy for lack of a better word maybe.

And yeah, how long are you really going be able to play with this strapped to your head pumping upclose 3D images into your brain.

Is it like little burst then back to regular view to the point you eventually just stick with regular view.

But after reading reports, and seeing people on youtube playing elite with this thing in action I'm kind of thinking I need this in my life. :) It looks like it will just be unreal.

I cant imagine the makers of this thing could have dreamed up a more suitable game to use this with.

I dunno though. Is it just taking things one step too far :)

Sickness could be in your head, if you start thinking you going to be sick or expecting to feel sick you will. And once that thought is in your head its hard not to keep thinking it.

Might need time to adapt, just 5 mins hear and there. I watched a vid of a guy who played for about 30 mins and he said he felt absolutely fine.

Ok, 2 questions: did you ever tryied the DK1? If yes, after which time lap did you felt sick?

On DK1 I was sick after not even 5 minutes. (maybe 2...).

Now I heard the DK2 where way better in taking off or delaying sickness compared to the DK1. Would be interesting to compare sickness times from DK1 to DK2.

Also, seems the AGE is an important factor. Olders, are more sensible to such. At 1 I was able to get into any rollercoaster, wheren't sick afterwards. Now, 39, I'm sick in any!

Also I read somewhere that if you try out the OR a few times per day, for short delays, it might help holding longer w/o sickness later on... now what's later and how long, no clue :D

Have you a strong astigmatism? How are you travelling in planes/ferries etc? It could be that you are particularly sensitive to this, it can happen unfortunately :( my not in any way a gamer shortsighted dad was able to fly in a spitfire in warthunder for 3 hours straight on his first go of a dk1 last xmas, so it can really depend on the person it seems.

If you dont have any issues like this then it could be you've tried too much too soon? Maybe try slowly building up your vr legs first with easy going demos like titans of space or the tuscany demo, 5 mins more than the last time every time.

If you don't own a DK1, let me be the one to tell you that VR as found with the Oculus Rift is disorientating. If you happen to suffer from vertigo or motion sickness when watching 3d movies, this device will be of no use to you. Nothing they can do hardware wise will fix your feeling of wanting to vomit. Some people just are prone to getting vertigo or motion sickness more than others. Sorry.

I felt a bit woozy immediately when looking around, but not too bad. The real sickness came after about 5 minutes or so. Tolerated about 15 mins total.

I never tried a DK1 sorry.

I might try a phased break in period of 5 mins a couple if times a day for a few days to see if I get used to it.

I always got car sick when I was young, still do if I am a passenger and try to read anything. Same sensation exactly.

I do have quite a strong astigmatism in one eye, do you think that is a problem?

Pretty much sadly, Oculus Rift really isn't for people with eye problems. I'm sure it will get better as they improve fidelity & lenses, but to really enjoy Rift you want as close to perfect vision as you can get.

Rumour has it that the commercial version will come with a custom barf bag.

I also think they will have an upgrade option for heavy users, a barf bucket with a pump outlet pipe which can be fed to the toilet. Those who get this option will no doubt be able to play Elite for lengthy sessions snacks in hand.

You can gain your 'sea legs' and be able to spend more time in the rift by having several short sessions -each time you will gain some resistance

I know I cannot use OR I can't even watch 3d tv. I have bad astigmatism in one eye, a spatial awareness disorder akin to menieres disease. and mild dyslexia. I cant play for too long and have to be aware of "Triggers" but play this game I will. Just have to be sensible about my time ingame and be ready to quit at any time.

I tried a friends trackir and found that to be trigger too so I rely on my scope and just hope lol.

the OR is great I played with it at the bafta event and lavecon. but doing a spin send waves of Motion sickness. I would like to get the OR but I also think that I wouldn't last,

At OT: Not in the slightest. VR never really bothered me, it always just felt right. Even in a DK1 for a year. The only thing that upset me was HL2.

I used to play racing games for hours and hours in a DK1 and I've already hit a 4 hour stint of ED in my DK2, and I only have to get out of that because of a RL interdiction :D

It is difficult to just go by past experiences. I easily get car sick and definitely can't handle something like deep sea fishing. However, I can play Elite in the DK2 all day long without issues.

I read that many people are sick with it. But it improves with the habit ? Perhaps take a medication for travel by car or plane ? Personally, I'm not sick, because I do not use this helmet

A couple of things to consider...

The workaround at the moment seems to be quite GPU intensive, making it harder to achieve 75 fps and thus low latency. This alone makes a huge difference to both comfort and experience. Try using low settings and see how you feel.

It is important to make sure EVERYTHING is set up correctly. For example, not disabling aero causes huge issues for some and again can make things uncomfortable. Calibrating correctly with regards to camera position and IPD make a huge difference to clarity and comfort.

Some people suffer more than others. I did a demo last night and one guy complained of feeling dizzy in ED! Never had that before. You usually build a tolerance though over time if you are one of the unlucky ones.

I think it is important to remember this is a dev kit and should be treated as such... Even if you are not "developing" games, you should still approach the rift with an experimental frame of mind and not just settle for an okay experience... You may be missing out its real potential. :)

I tried it again last night, but changed the lenses from A to B, and on this occasion did not wear any glasses so i reduced the distance of the image to my eyes. It was definitely better, but I still felt a bit dizzy. It gave me hope that I might be able to break myself into it slowly.

I was wondering by using the workaround to get it playing in ED, does that stop the unit using the custom profile in OR for my papillary distance and lens setting ?? If so do you think it will be better once Frontier implement the SDk for the new unit ??

Interesting story on Gamespot about the DK2

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/when-you-re-looking-at-oculus-rift-dk2-s-virtual-r/1100-6421452/

It seems that OR are still using mobile phone displays, just like they did in the DK1.

It seems to me that they have an awful lot of software people taken from all over the place but I haven't heard of them recruiting any big hitting hardware designers and until they do or get their own displays build custom I wonder how much further they can go.
