Anyone else find the system map underwhelming?

Anyone else disapointed that the system is not represented as an actual solar system that you can swing the camera about?

Having an orrery of a system would be awesome.

It's a lot slower to navigate than what we have now though.

This is a decision where practicality trumped looks. Otherwise, there's absolutely no reason to not do an orrery model.

Now, I can open the system map, look are what is there, choose a target and go back to flying my ship in seconds. This is important for me during exploration runs where I open up the map multiple times per system.

An orrery map, which would surely come with its animated intro, would entangle me a lot.

A toggle would be required and why allocate resources for a feature most people will switch off for practicality after the novelty wears off? I even turned off the UI animations because it takes less time to use panels without them even though I have no computer power shortage.

Its practical to me but I can see why some want the orrery map.

It's okay, although I do have two complaints: bigger one - map is being opened in separated window istead in some sort of holo projection in ship's cockpit; thus it feels somewhat detached and out of place, design-wise. Second - data presented in the map might be slightly better organized; I have constant feeling that I have to make few clicks more that it should be necessary..

How much time do you want to spend virtually flying around the system map against actually flying around the system in your ship;). The new update in 2.2 will be welcome but the orrery map can wait until more urgent matters are taken care of.

An orrery view would allow more efficient route plotting for explorers - being able to see the relative positions of planets in the systems rather than just raw distance from the stellar body would enable more efficient route plotting. However, it would also only really make sense with in-system waypoint plotting and would have to take into account planets around secondary stars.

I'd be in the boat of mostly wanting the current view, but a 3d model would be amazing when exploring to scan the whole system, to plot out which planets to go to in order easily. (Plus, awesome graphics always rock)

Well, I'd like it. But I think the client would like it less. I don't wanna wait 12 seconds each system for the beautiful system map to load. So as the tech stands, thanks, but no thanks.

Yeah like alot of such features, it would be cool for about seconds. I like it fine the way it is now.

Your navigation panel already lists all the things in the system in order of how close they are to you. If you just go down that list, you'll end up visiting each thing fairly efficiently.

I think an orrery map would really help with the feeling of being in IN the universe.
You would get a better feel for being in the system, the orrery could show various POIs around the system, shipping lanes, etc. It would allow more active play when plotting a course through a system (for exploration for example) rather than the fairly reactive navigation panel closet body list.

The map, in whatever form, needs to be running in parallel with our flying, so we can call it up quickly .... as though it is just another window that's waiting to be opened. Open it, close it, back to the main screen. I guess it isn't done this way because ... resources .... but no harm in asking.

It's a "placeholder (TM)"

It's also schizophrenic because the nav panel on the left snd the system map seem to have access to different information to each other.

As people have already said, the current system map is a placeholder, and we'll be getting an orrery "at some point", which I'm really looking forward to. A few people have raised concerns here which I hadn't considered before, so on reflection, I'd say a very firm YES to the orrery map, but include it as an alternative to, rather than a replacement for, the existing system map.

And at the same time, please let us set our own (multiple and persistent) waypoints, including down on planetary surfaces, on both maps.
