Anyone else find the system map underwhelming?

When there is a route already plotted, I want to be able to click a system on that route and drag the cursor to some neighbouring star, say to avoid a patch of anarchy or unscoopables... the computer will then replot as best as possible to go through the star I selected.

This would allow me to set my route and forget it, drop off at some stations on the way and know that I am avoiding those hazards I plotted around.

Your navigation panel already lists all the things in the system in order of how close they are to you. If you just go down that list, you'll end up visiting each thing fairly efficiently.
Not really - it's far easier to understand which routes will be quicker when you have a visual representation. For instance, it's difficult to decide on a route when you have three or four planets with satellites at different points in the system.

At the moment, just selecting the closest body and travelling to that is the quickest way to navigate a system, but consider when you are approaching a planet with multiple moons/ As you approach, you can see where each moon is in relation to each other, and thus you can decide on a shorter line to take that saves you having to double back on yourself. Apply the same principle to an orrery view.

And the time you spend trying to plot the perfect route around the system, you could actually be moving and scanning things. Plotting a route like that every time you want to scan a system is going to be a cumulative time-sink.

I would like it cause it's more engaging than just going down the nearest body list on the Nav panel.

FD did have some earlier mock ups of what system maps will eventually look like.

The pretty long loading times are what I find most annoying, really.

Could it be visually better? Sure, I guess it could. But the loading times... ugh...

LESSONS LEARNED

Current version is Visually underwhelming, maybe.

Practical - Goodness me yes.

It's these little missunderstandings that make people think frontier are doing a bad job, when infact they are doing a great job.

People's first idea is an orrey.
Yeah that would be cool!!!!!

Of course, it's the natural first guess - your gut instinct.
And it's not a bad one.

And frontier aren't doing what your gut is saying. BAD FRONTIER, be more inline with my untested idea!!!

and Star citizen just showed of it's Orrey map right?
it Reminded me of I-war2

This star-map was impractical.

It was hard to locate stations or locations that are in sub-orbit.
It was fiddly to cycle through, zoom in and out, cycle to and from some more.

A later patch (fan or official).

Gave an A-Z list for all the bodies in that system.
Boring. Super lame.
Made navigating so much easier.

having an orrey and a body 300,000 ls out, would be a pain.
Underwhelming and limiting our current version is - is practical for a number of reasons.

Depending if the Orrey would be a replacment or an additional view.

For practicallity reasons.

Planet Actual scale vs Fixed size Should be a toggle.
A slider for Orbital radii: Fixed minimun vs 1:1 Scale.

There is a minimum radius so the above planets do not overlap over orbits.
(and you can scrub the orbits to the real size)

Relative positions vs actual positions.
(planets line up vs actual positions)

For me, the fatal flaw of the system map is this: I don't know how many times I've had to "combat log" after coming out of hyper jump and accidentally pressing system view rather than Galaxy view, then knowing that by the time the view shows up and I'm actually able to cancel the g thing and take control of my ship I will be neck deep in the corona and spitting sparks.

So i just panic reset my computer and when I log in, I'm safely stationary at a decent distance from the star.

It's okay, although I do have two complaints: bigger one - map is being opened in separated window istead in some sort of holo projection in ship's cockpit; thus it feels somewhat detached and out of place, design-wise. Second - data presented in the map might be slightly better organized; I have constant feeling that I have to make few clicks more that it should be necessary..

And for some reason all the sounds from the cockpit disappear as well, which is a small thing but annoying (same as the discovery scanner reducing the volume of everything else for some reason).

One big reason for me I would like an orrery view is plotting the most efficient route when exploring. I would say that an orrery should be in addition to the current view not a replacement. The current system view is great for finding something and then heading straight there. An orrery could help with those who need to see the actual physical layout of the system. Given that the system view is to get the upgrade showing the planet surfaces, an orrery could give a way of going back and forward in time (like it did in Frontier/FE). If you could then move down to the surface of the planet you could then watch a sunrise/set or planetrise etc in a way you can't given the games practical limitation of being only real time.

Again, does it add much to the game? For some maybe not, but for those of us who find it interesting exploring, it adds another dynamic to explore. I once saw a tri-planet group (two planets orbiting each other and another planet orbiting that pair), I would have loved to have seen how they rotate around each other, something I couldn't do as their orbits were days.

Actually that's an amazing idea. I would love to see some of these systems in high speed to see the orbits in action. Though Mitterand Hollow at high speed would be hilarious.
