Anyone else is flying the realist ship that says the Horizons will not make it for Christmas release?

Let's not sugar coat it: Horizons is huge release and there is no way 3 weeks of testing will be enough to iron out all the bugs, to release something FD would be proud off. Not saying it is bad, but every delay is always little bitter. I feel like FD should not have commited to any date, instead go with "when it's done".

We've had too short beta periods before (pre-release and Powerplay especially), where longer testing seemed necessary as the releases still had things people were finding as part of the beta tests.
I imagine we'll still get the release before Xmas, but it may well not be bug free, but then what is nowadays? ;)

Doesn't matter, they will release it.
Just as they released ED before christmas last year.
They don't have to release something they're proud off, they have to release something that people can buy as christmas gifts.

If what you say is true, then in hindsight the decision to delay the beta makes zero sense.

I don't mind bugs that are minor, for example this galNet bug where you would randomly end up in another power window. This is just annoying but a bug that just wouldn't let me out of my ship is blocking and I expect these kind of bugs to be gone upon its launch.
Let#s just don't make the mistake of 1.4 again and deliver a product that is somewhat finished plus it being finished before xmas :) Because this is what quality is. Being good AND fast. I have no doubt that FD is able to do that.

If the beta starts early next week, they'll still have approx. 3 weeks of testing.

The delay is due to some show stopper issue which prompted FD to take that step.

As dextrovix rightly said, nothing releases without bugs anyway.

The aim is to release a workable Horizons before christmas, not a bug free one.

BEFORE christmas is essential for FD.....they will release.

/crystal ball off

Unless they are going to get crucified in the press over the quality of the release then they will release it, the press largely won't be interested, far bigger things to write about.

FD form is to get a beta out but not much found actually gets fixed before release, which unless it's a show stopper is not unusual. There are always bugs, but the cost of them not releasing for Xmas, financially and it terms of shareholder confidence that this model of annual expansions to fund the game can work could be catastrophic

Why not...the current build wasn't considered fit for release.

Delays happen all the time and while we in the industry hate to admit and often try to avoid it, compressing QA/test time is always the first to happen in a time crunch. Yes, there will be a smaller beta period, but such is the way things go when you have deadlines.

Does it matter when exactly the new "season" lands?
Yes, if they miss the christmas sale as release,
i guess they will earn less money on the season.
Thus having less budget to invest into doing something really important:
Giving life to the galaxy created, actually involving the players and iron out bugs/module performance/netcode.

They'll drag it out, if they have to get out and push...

Most of the big problems will be sorted out in a raft of patches that get rolled out in the first week and a half. The rest will be stress testing, which they can compress by encouraging a big beta bang (not that this will need much encouragement.)

Christmas sales are important, but what I think is even more important here are shareholders on the board.

DB and his CFO have made projections on profit that have direct impact on their share price. Missing the deadline looks bad to shareholders and will likely skew their projections for the next fiscal year. Hitting the deadline is likely more financial/business related rather than customer satisfaction with quality.

Agreed. We've been here before. The same exact question was asked this time last year with the original 1.0. It was released, it was missing stuff and had bugs. The world didn't end.

Cheers,

Drew.

Horizons will make the Christmas release bugs and all. Why you would possibly think that FD would not release something just because it has bugs in it is beyond me.

The original release was like a steamy swamp crawling with bugs. It was released to make money from the christmas period. Do you really think FD will miss out on the Christmas period over a few bugs?

Horizons will go live on sale even if it doesn't work.

Just because of the business model and what Xmas means to game developers....it will be released before Xmas.

It would take something utterly catastrophic for that not to happen.....bugs, schmugs, FD need Xmas cash to fund the next year of the game development, season 2 and then..... Xmas release for season 3....you see a pattern emerging here?

Well in my oppinion it will be released but it will be horribly bugged as 1.4 was. Still I really want to believe that Im wrong :]
