Anyone else want a Rift/Monitor toggle key?

I really love playing elite dangerous on the Rift.

But when I use the galaxy map or use the starport services I find it much easier with a mouse and a screen due to the current resolution of DK2. Is it too much to ask for a key/button which toggles between OR and Monitor? and ideally toggling between controller configuration slots as well (e.g. re-enabling the mouse for 2D etc)

I will buy beers and pizza for whomever does this...:)

We need the galaxy map, system map and outfitter to NOT destroy immersion by beeing fullscreen.
Thats solves most problems. Instead they should make use of the good practise guide, and doing these systems
in the cockpit, like the station service/trade/bulletin screen, who is a big window in the middle of the cockpit.

The currect fullscreen solution is a big NO, when it comes to VR. I fully understand that they cant prioritize this now
but they should do it after release I hope.

Yeah that would be handy especially when we get to walk about, tried it on other fps games and it just makes me wanna vomit.

It's funny how the associated meaning of a phrase swamps its literal meaning. The VR version of Half Life 2 made me want to vomit... but it was still brilliant and I enjoyed playing though it :)

I'm all for a toggle button for the VR. I'll more than likely play the out-the-pilot's-seat parts in VR, but I prefer checking the commodities market, bulletin board, and rolling news, on a higher resolution flat screen.

I certainly hope this is added... like already said now, its a minor convenience for now, but for the future DLC parts of the game it could well be essential.

VR for me is way better as a seated experience, and whilst some FPS stuff works on in VR others are not so good.

the ability to toggle would be welcome imo.

Nope, not a good idea at all.

The Galaxy Screen is really great with our without the Oculus Rift. I find it much easier to use since Gamma 1 was released, and super intuitive in 3D.

out of curiosity, given it would not be a forced action, why would you not like the option of it for others who do want / need it (for some the galaxy map can actually induce VR sickness, which you do not get in the game for instance)

There is another thread ( change the last part of the URL to this: t=43396 )

On it one of the the devs posted what i have quoted below. I use it to stream an undistorted and non color corrected view, but when i am snacking or such, and take the Rift off to see what i am eating or drinking, I can use that secondary window to still navigate things. Being that the res and such are editable, you could edit it to fill up your 2d screen as needed

Hey,

As anyone who came down to EGX will have noticed, we have a debug feature in the game for mirroring the output to a second screen when you're playing on Oculus Rift. This is really useful for us when demoing the game to people (thanks to Pablo for implementing it) and a few people asked about when that feature will be available.

Well, it'll be with you in Beta 2, and if I remember correctly, might actually be out there in Beta 1 already!

I should point out that this is very much a debug feature, it's not very user friendly, there's a chance you could degrade your experience by tinkering with the options, etc, etc. So if you are seeing judder or framerate drops please be sure to remove this option before sending a ticket, as if it's caused by this debug feature we aren't likely to fix it (not right now at least). If you can't get the second window displaying just right for how you want to use it, then I'm not guaranteeing we'll do anything about it. Having said all that though, I think it might still be useful for any of you creating your own Rift gameplay videos, so I'll share how to enable it here...

Basically, it's just a few lines you add in to your AppConfig.xml file (which you can find in the same folder as the Elite Dangerous exe...). Just paste this chunk of text into the <AppConfig> section, run the game, and the second window should pop up.

<StereoExtraDisplay>
<Enabled>true</Enabled>
<Monitor>0</Monitor>
<Width>720</Width>
<Height>810</Height>
<VSync>false</VSync>
<BehaviourIfStereoRenderDisabled>HideWindow</BehaviourIfStereoRenderDisabled>
</StereoExtraDisplay>

One little bug I've noticed with it, is that the second screen will steal focus when it first appears, so you need to switch focus back to the game again to get input, but other than that, it was working fine for me and the ambassadors at EGX for the last few days.

If you want to tweak the options here then they are mostly straightforward. Monitor is the id for the monitor you want the window to appear on, width and height is the resolution, and vsync should always be set to false (otherwise it can cause some juddering).

Once again though, this is a development debug feature, so it's not officially supported, may be removed without notice in the future, etc, etc. But if you find it useful then go ahead and use it!

Cheers,

Eddie

Although a toggle button would satisfy your need, I'd just like to offer an alternative solution of multi-monitor support. The OR would always show the VR view whilst the monitor could be used to show the maps, and all other non-immersive content such as game options screens.

For myself, I have played around with my controller settings so that I no longer need the mouse on the maps. It took a bit of getting used to but I find it okay now, although not as intuitive. Hopefully with more development the OR view of maps and stuff will be improved and this won't be an issue. However, now that I've retired the mouse, even if there was a toggle type option, I think I would probably continue straining my eyes rather than keep lifting the headset.

I wouldn't use it myself - I hate removing the rift while in game. I'd rather they make the map easier to use. There's nothing wrong with adding a toggle, but I'd rather see the devs focus on more pressing issues first.

I'd rather see it projected as a 2d screen within the OR, like the station services until they think of a way of selecting reliably in 3d mode.

I too would like a quick switch button. however. I am quite certain this is one hella huge undertaking that takes stupid amounts of coderizing which I for one would rather see spent on planetary landings.

So. You guys having problems with your galaxy mapses. Have you bound your HOTAS buttons and axes for use in the galaxy map? You haven't have you? You still tryin to mouse it while in the rift are you? Well that stuff don't fly does it? Bind them axes boy!

Whilst I can understand why people might want this, for me it seems to be missing the point a little =)

If something isn't working well enough in-game and in-VR then I'd rather that effort was put into making it work there rather than allowing a 'side-door' to make it appear out-of-VR. The danger with the latter is that, since you now have a work-around in place, fixing the initial issue becomes less of a priority. If/when it is fixed some people continue to use the work-around sometimes in complete ignorance that the initial issue as been resolved. Very few people read patch notes...

From a purely personal point of view, once I've strapped on the HMD I really don't want to come out. I may have to invest in some drinking straws for the wine this weekend =)

The snag is, going forward some parts of the game will be better suited to VR than others.

ie some people no matter how well it is technically supported may feel sick when on foot, but may get away with it when flying.

I plan on trying to play fully in VR in all parts of the game, but equally I realise it may not be feasible for me.
(half life 2 is great, but it stuffs me up after 30 mins or so if I do not stop.

What about toggling in such a way that it would disable head tracking for OR? So you wouldnt have to take your OR down.

You still would get 3D effect and nice full FOV and yet you would move like in any other FPS.

I concur with what others have said, I don't like having to remove the Rift in game. Leaning in usually allows me to read everything. Tracking seems to maybe have been improved so I can lean in a little better in Gamma. The key is sitting far enough back to stay in the DK2 effective range and not get too close to the camera to glitch it.

I would very much like a flip button. I have tried to macro the command sequence to swap to primary monitor but not go it yet. Might have to have another go.

Galaxy map is not the issue, a decent HOTAS control map makes it easy enough to use and I like bringing up the map and feeling the floor disappear.

My issue is the paperwork. It is no big immersion breaker for me to land, drop into the hanger and then take the goggles off to check the boards, update my price lists and trade. This needs a second monitor or windows or something and is a pain flipping the goggles up and down.

Chances are I would stretch my legs and go find a motel (statel? spatel?) bar to do this stuff in anyway. Might have to redecorate my room a la Moss Eisley.
