I just ran into this issue where ED audio is really quiet and nothing I do makes it louder. I rebooted PC, ED, messed with some audio settings, and turned off the communications function that lets windows turn down volume for calls. I've been googling quite a bit and nothing's come up. I miss my audio! It dang near ruins the game!
Anyone ever experience really low audio?

Is it in night mode by any chance?
Do you use headphones or speakers? If speakers, check the power cable.
If headphones, are they standard jacks, or USB?
Do you additional audio software, aside from standard drivers? (Like SoundBlaster X-Fi, for example)

I haven't noticed that on my copy of it but did notice one thing once the update was complete: The music build-up during the initial splash screen is clipped. It starts building up, then 2 seconds of silence, then it continues through the crescendo. Not much of a bother, I suspect it'll get fixed on a minor update. Otherwise, I haven't noticed any other changes in sound on my end.
After the update I found that the voice part of the sound was distorted although the music was playing okay. I reinstalled my sound card drivers which fixed it but later came across a post where it was acknowledged as a bug/issue and sufferers were advised to check in their PC sound section that the "24 bits,48000Hz (Studio Quality) option was checked.
Yes I checked all the things mentioned so far. None of those things are the problem. 
I'm using a Rift, so I grabbed a key and opened it with the rift story. Audio fixed. Steam must have done something in the background (the audio problem started after steamvr crashed yesterday). I prefer using steam, but oh well I guess.
