I would recommend at least having a hauler with as many cargo racks as you can afford!

I know we just haven't been on at the same time. But hopefully we will be able to hook up for some trade routes together. I did end up getting a hauler but only have stock cargo so far

We have a trade nut in our group who loves the credits he is on 1.2 Mill every 12 mins profit that is, I am more than happy to help you, if I pull my Lakon 9 out also you will get a trade dividend of around 70k just for being in the wing

Trading for profit is very slow in the beginning, even with a Hauler. You're best bet starting out is to simply head to RES's and bounty farm NPC ships. You can do it in a Sidewinder, but an Eagle is better, and Viper better still. As long as you register some damage in the 30 seconds before the target hit's 0% you'll get the bounty.
I wouldn't bother with trading as a source of income until you can get a Type 6 or better.
