Newcomer / Intro Anyone know how to link a Steam acct to a CMDR

Ok - I'm not new - but I haven't used the Steam client before - and I just bought one :(

Using Steam Login starts my existing Factabulous CMDR (despite that CMDR having nothing to do with steam) - I kinda wanted a new CMDR. The faq https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=485 says I should be able to get the option to link my steam login to a different account using 'Link Account' but it never offers me this option - just logs me in. But I'm sure I saw 'link' last night and can't find a way back to it ...

Anyone remember how to get this? I've contacted support, but I bet they're busy right now...

Thx

Someone could help us ?
FYI: No-one from fdev will answer, we're really hoping Para is around and can remember.

Be sure to raise a contact with support as they are most likely to be able to help (though they will be very busy right now).

Para is around, he's up in the Suggestions forum wielding a rather large truncheon, last I looked.
At any rate, I'd like to find out too - I'm still at nada on getting back into the game, though to be fair I DID just get back from work.

You called? ....

Actually I don't have a lot to offer just that if your Steam account is using the same email address as your pre-existing Frontier account (or one of them) then maybe that is why Steam thinks you should be using that commander.

Maybe you need to "log-out machine" from the launcher that starts with Steam?

Maybe Steam noticed your existing Elite installation and piggy-backed onto it? Have you checked where Steam installed your new game?

have you tried going into the Frontierstore.net account and checking that your account is not "linked with Steam" - I don't know how to unlink it if it is.

Just to rub noses in it - I now have 3 Steam versions of Elite (sad innit) - one is not installed (pre april 2019 so runs direct) - 2 are in different Steam User accounts, both with emails linked to their own email in frontierstore account. Never had an issue - even updating yesterday was seamless. (Shame F D servers and the update bugs were not.)

Thanks - it was a longhsot. I don't use the same email for steam / frontier so unless - like you say - it has piggy-backed via some registry setting I have no clue. When I log out the launcher and say 'Log in with steam' it just does it - returning to my original acct :(

Ah well, the long wait for support awaits ....

Where has Steam installed your game - is it different from your legacy install?

Under steam, so yes, different.

I looked in my main acct (non-steam) and it does indeed say that it is associated with Steam <sigh> - so waiting on support. Install is such a mess.

Yeah - they really have mucked-up the integration with Steam. Good luck. Maybe support will sort you out in time for patch2 of patch 1 a - ;)

Well, I have got my first 4 CMDRs to work with, so I'm not stressing too much. I will be asking them for the PJ that I would have been buying in the sale with the ARX I was planning on making if I could log in - when they reply ;)

You could buy the PJs in the store in the meantime though - to get the sale discounts that is - or is the store broken too?

I'm not paying for more ARX :) 400 free this week (ending tonight) + 400 tomorrow would have done it. Luckily I wrote the guide to how to earn ARX ;)

(I did buy ARX for FC and bought a new copy of the game this week - I'm not paying out more for a burner CMDR)

There is a button to unlink the Steam account under 'Third party accounts' in Frontier Store. Maybe there also is an option to link it. Otherwise, you can redeem keys for other sites using one of the other menu items there, that's how I got mine for Oculus. Maybe you can redeem a key for Steam there as well and then enter it somewhere in Steam? Just guessing though.

Otherwise, I can only come up with this: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=277 (updated on April 26th)

Steam Login option should appear once you logout the machine.

O7,

But how to start the launcher from Steam ? The only thing I can do on Steam is "Buy" but I 've already buyed the game on the Frontier site store five year ago.

Go to your My Account pages in the frontier store (frontierstore.net) and in the "Partner Keys" you can claim a key for the Steam versions. (Do the base game first.)

"The key you generate for Steam will add your games to any Steam library but WILL NOT GRANT ACCESS TO ELITE DANGEROUS/HORIZONS without a registered Frontier account and a copy of the game. For this reason, please do not give your Steam key away to a friend! They won’t be able to play without having already bought the game from Steam or from the Frontier Store. "

BTW - the game is on sale at a discount at the moment in Steam - £11.99 for the Commander Pack deluxe edition - why not buy an alternate account and leave your frontier-bought one separate - you just need a different email (an alias).

Yes, but the article I linked states that things changed on April 25 2019 and all licenses purchased since then are non-key licenses now that behave differently from how we know it. In particular, they apparently utilize a mythic device named Steam Log now, whatever that may be. Could be some Totem pole of sorts :)

The person I was replying to had said "but I 've already buyed the game on the Frontier site store five year ago" - so that is why I gave them that correct information (taken from my own five-year-old frontier store account).

Maybe read what you are criticizing in future?

Just to round this thread off - Support got back to me - they disconnected my accounts so I can associate my new CMDR with his new ACCT. After some more frantic clicking around and dodgy looking .NET installs required for URL clicks I'm in :)

fdev - their support is good, their install processes .... ummmm :D
