O and X's - or maybe graffiti.
My best guess is they're trying to clean the broken ship. Maybe getting rid of the mycoid virus on it - though I'm not sure how the virus works.
We don't know they're scavengers for sure, our ships automatically designated them. They could be farmer-esque things.
