The upgrade was for maintenance. There was a thread posted in the news section of the forum this morning.

Greetings Commanders, There'll be an update for the PC version of Elite Dangerous at around 10:00 UTC for maintenance purposes. This should not affect anything in-game and is expected to require zero down-time. o7
