I've been away for a few months and find the new (to me) forum design crisp but bland and lifeless.

What happened to:
  • animated avatars
  • forum rank
  • many other features I fear

?

PS: Sorry if this has already been discussed. I've been away for a while.

Not even a little bit. This new forum layout is so much nicer to navigate and it works on my phone perfectly. The old site ran like crap on my phone.

Functionally I'm not finding it any worse of better than the old. Presentation wise it's obviously geared for phones which is different but not good or bad in and of itself. The color schemes are a bit garish though (that's saying something compared to the old :p).

Not really. Much cleaner look, far easier to navigate, and looks better on mobile, too. I'm sure more bits and bobs will be added in due course. There's probably a Roadmap™.
