Hardware & Technical Anyone recommend a good high end Ryzen motherboard...

Since the disasterous news for intel re it's microcode bug requiring an OS level fix and potential 30%+ performance hit on all modern intel CPUs, I'm giving serious thought to jumping ship and trading in my still unbuilt 8700k and z370 mobo for a Ryzen 1800x and an x370 board.

I'm not that familiar with Ryzen boards, but so far the Crosshair VI Hero seems pretty good, does anyone have any other recommendations for good top end Ryzen boards??

How prevalent is that bug? I googled news stories for it but couldn't find anything more recent than last July.

I'm quite fond of my "mid-end" ASRock AB350M Pro4. It's a nice little no-frills board and has so far given me zero trouble over some months. Running a Ryzen 1700X and 16GB ECC RAM (with functional ECC too, try that trick with intel).

30% hit would be a big biowaste, I bought an i7 7700 just a couple of months ago. I hope the performance drop will be closer to 5%...

In any case, Intel could be in big trouble, facing a tsunami of lawsuits if this happens.

If you go to Ryzen, wait for Ryzen 2, which is coming soon

;)

Yeah, that'd most likely be my plan, the 1800x looks okay, but for gaming at least it isn't a patch on the 8700k (although it'd beat it after a 30% perf drop!).

Still going to keep an eye on the intel situation and see how it develops. In all likleyhood, it wont affect gamers too much, as we are mostly GPU bound, so dropping some CPU performance isn't too critical, still sucks though :(

When I do upgrade I will be going for one of these, unless something else better comes along at a similar price:

MSI AMD Ryzen AM4 X370 GAMING PLUS ATX Motherboard

You might want to wait a little bit, the new 2nd Gen Ryzen is due very very soon, in fact in february so you'll be kicking yourself if you get one now & the price of the 1800x drops then or it's updated sibling outperforms it by a lot.

Now I'm really worried that my PC will become unusable.

I have an i5 4690. :(

To expand on this, I'm a complete idiot, and don't really understand what's going on.

There's no doubt that this is a major screw up, hence why releasing a patch with such potentially severe performance hits is even an option, but that being said....

Don't worry, so far the general consensus is that it won't affect gamers at all.

Ooh, and I think I've found my backup Ryzen board... https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X370-GAMING-M7-ACK/Overview
I'm assuming the Ryzen refresh will still work on this board??

Aye, obviously we'll have to see. That isn't stopping me from provisionally looking at AMD, just in case.

I'm guessing the fix isn't actually live yet? I believe I read something about patch Tuesday.

That's why you might want to wait, there is always the possibility that older boards might need a BIOS update to support the Ryzen Refresh. I had to do that to my current system to get it to work with my (then new) 860k. Unfortunately, the 860k wouldn't work until I bought an old APU that was supported (the cheapest I could find), tore the newly built, none working PC down again. Installed the APU, installed Windows and updated the BIOS, tore it down again and reinstalled the 860k once more and she booted right up.

Of course, that whole process took me an extra £30 and an extra week in build time. Not really helped by the r9 270 that I bought wasn't working either...

I'd say it is almost a guarantee that the motherboard will need a bios update. New motherboards are coming out though in Feb to go with the updated Ryzen processors. I think I will hold off till then.

Here is a dumb question. But I ask as I'm starting to get concerns about Intel. (I just found out that the COBRA sold a load of stock just weeks ago. I fear he knew about this then)

So, if I were to get a Ryzen 3 CPU, whatever the higher price one is called, and 8GB of RAM, I'm guessing necessary as the new MoBo would only support DDR4? Do you think such a machine, paired with my existing GTX 960 4GB, would continue to give me a similar ED experience as I enjoy now? That is to say, 1080p @50-60fps on high preset?

Look I know I'm pretty dumb here, but that's why I don't answer questions. Just ask. :)

I think it's far too early to consider jumping ship. My advice would be only consider AMD if you are already in the process of acquiring parts for a new pc build (and I probably wouldn't even then), and if you have an existing Intel chip just sit still and see how this all shakes out.

No way no how are consumers going to take a significant performance hit and Intel's going to just go "Welp, sorry folks!" Plus, it doesn't really even sound like it's going to be a noticeable problem for gamers and casual users anyway.

Still too early to get overly excited.

The 3-series are office chips (think "i3 but good"), and such a 4-core/4-thread CPU will run into limits in Elite. For a midrange game machine I'd look at a 5-1600 (6 cores/12 threads).

Ah okay, thank you. I was not aware of this. :)
