Hardware & Technical Anyone recommend a good monitor for Elite.

I'm looking to buy a new monitor. The main thing i need is a good Black level. My current monitor is an LG IPS. Its colours are amazing. Lovely sharp image at 1080p. Looks great in all games but its blacks could be better. I've heard that IPS screens have trouble with dark images, there's a glow that takes Away some of the blackness of space. Planets and stations etc look amazing tho. Its like there needs to be something to contrast against before its black looks black. I've done all i can with game and GPU settings. Its not game breaking. But if I'm getting a new one i may as well get one thats good for my favourite game.
Is there a different screen technology that might be better for this game? Or any of you guys recommend a good 27" model.

Thanks cmdrs

😊

I haven't heard such thing.

Anyway, you more or less just want a good quality monitor. For 27" I guess you want 2560*1440. I use a Dell U2713HM but that's obviously outdated by now. However Dells U series is pretty good.

Yeah its called "ips glow" apparently.

Personally I use my 48" Sony Bravia TV

Great colours, minimal lag (I don't notice any with some 30 years of gaming experience behind me), nice colour depth, nice blacks

On the downside it's not 4k ready, but neither is my PC or my eyes to be honest, so I'm not fussed about that :)

As for decent monitors, I'm a massive fanboy of ASUS and Samsung monitors, so anything outside of it i'm not too akin to.

If you have the money, this is a rather nice monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236405 (144hz, 27inch, 2560x1440 resolution, G-Sync)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824022246 this monitor is a 4k monitor with FreeSync, 60hz, 28 inch.

Also, if you're using nVidia (not so sure about ATI/AMD), make sure the output dynamic range is set to Full (0-255) rather limited (16-255). You'll notice a larger color profile with the monitors. Things pop out with that set at that.

IPS displays doesn't really have any more trouble with black levels than any other panel type you'll find in a PC monitors. I think TN panels are a bit better with blacks but they're so much worse at colours and viewing angles they aren't worth considering as far as I'm concerned.

Best hope for better black levels is OLED but I don't recall seeing any PC monitors using OLED yet.

Can't recommend any specific 27" models but I'll agree with Shintai and say that Dell's Ultrasharp line is great.

EDIT: Oh, and Brett's tip is fantastic. Can't believe I forgot to mention that. If you have an Nvidia card and use HDMI or Displayport and haven't changed the dyanimc range setting it'll change your life. Slight hyperbole, but only slight.

Actually i was just thinking about using a tv. Maybe get a tv as a dedicated ED screen and switch over to the monitor for everything else. Also 32" tv's are cheap these days. Tv's usually have a "game mode" that gets rid of lag.

The short answer is I would get one of these - I have recommended them to several of my colleagues and friends and they have always been well received.

With regards to the IPS - there are IPS and IPS. Without going too technical on it the stat you're looking for is contrast ratio - the difference between black and white. The problem is that many manufactures lie about their contrast ration, and LG are one of the worst offenders so you can't really use the quoted figures to compare.

Even if you don't go for the ACER I would strongly recommend sticking with IPS. The alternative won't give you anything like the blacks or the richness of colour.

There are also a whole load of things about calibrating your monitor - it's worth having a google as it's not as straight forward as many people think.

Hope that helps! ;)

Yea I have no issues at all using mine..

One thing I would heavily suggest is to turn off any post processing that modern TV's come with... noise reduction.. colour boosting... white correction... black correction... turn all that rubbish off and response time is unnoticeable

Yeah isn't there a difference between Native contrast and some other contrast? Thats how they lie about it.
I tried a calibrating thing i found online. The proper calibration kits are expensive. The monitors preset for photography is the best for contrast and blacks, so I'm giving that a try for a while.

Yes the ouptut dynamic range is important. Set on full its soooo much better. Why oh why don't Nvidia fix this ?? It should be on full by default.

I recently bought a Dell 27" G-sync.
Have to say, looks lovely and the g-sync does work. However:
- Was a shed load of dosh
- Needs an Nvidia graphics card for G-sync
- At it's resolution (2500*1440), needs a decent graphics card for the resolution
- I'm guessing you could get a decent TN, non-gsync 27" for probably half the price, and whilst g-sync is a nice to have, in retrospect, I'm not sure it's worth the money. Probably better off using a lower refresh monitor and using the cash on a Oculus Rift, which one you have it, is where you'd want to do most of your flying

Yeah, a really good monitor costs silly amounts of money.
I think that Ultra Wide screens are the best for gaming. But the good ones costs allot of money and still are not perfect. I got an Acer Predator X34 after just going up and up in price and model. It does not have any of the issues that comes with some of the monitors but do have a bit of IPS glow. That glow can be fixed a bit apparently but the method sounds a bit damaging (involves a creditcard and a hairdryer - yeah, I will not do that with one of the most expensive monitors out there...)

LG got some Ultra wide quite cheap; that was what I started looking at. And Asus uses LG tech so... I got a LG I guess :)

That x34 is a sweeeeeet monitor. Crazy money tho

Actually I ended up with X34 because of a post that was enlightning - you spend most of your time staring at that screen. It is one of the most important buys for your computer as it does not change as often as the rest!

So I bought an X34

Yep...I bought a Dell 3440x1440 21:9 ultrawide, and it is the single best hardware purchase I have ever made Total game changer, and worth every single penny.

I have been looking in to 27 inch IPS G-Sync monitors for a while and like others I narrowed it down to:

Asus ROG Swift PG279Q - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-...r-2560x1440-4ms-10001-dp-hdmi-2x-usb-30-black

or

Acer Predator XB271HU - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-...x1440-4ms-1000000001-hdmi-dp-usb-2x-speakers-

My personal preference was leading towards the Acer. That being said, they are expensive and currently they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

I am waiting for the AMD Vega 10 cards to get released to see how much better than my 980Ti they are and if they are alot better I may go for an AMD card with a FreeSync monitor (which is £200 cheaper than the G-Sync Equivalent):

Acer XF270HU - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-...60x1440-4ms-350cd-m2-hdmi-dp-dvi-usb-30-hub-b
